Priests don’t take a vow of poverty and if they come from wealthy family or have wealth of their own prior to taking holy orders, they get to keep it. And they can earn on the side too, though that may be frowned on. Not saying this is the case here, just that him having wealth doesn’t necessarily mean he stole it.
