Second-Most Commonly Prescribed Drug for Older Adults Is Linked to Bone Loss
New York Post ^ | Nov. 25, 2024 | Tracy Swartz

A popular thyroid medication taken by 23 million Americans may be associated with bone loss, a startling new study finds.

Levothyroxine — marketed under brand names such as Synthroid — is the second-most commonly prescribed medication among older adults in the US. It’s consumed by about 7% of the US population.

The drug addresses hypothyroidism, also known as an underactive thyroid, by replacing or providing more of a thyroid hormone naturally produced by the body. The study authors, from Johns Hopkins Medicine, linked levothyroxine use to a greater loss of bone mass and bone density over six years — even in older adults with normal thyroid function.

***Levothyroxine — marketed under brand names such as Synthroid***

Wow! I have been on that since 1978! I must be dead by now. Nope! Still kicking. Only bone problem I have had is a massive gout attack in the right knee two months ago. I am 78 years old.

Does Prolia actually work for you? I’ve balked at getting it because every dang medication for bone loss I’ve tried throughout the years has caused serious muscle pain. Pain to the point it made it hard to walk.

My mother was on Synthroid. I swear it caused her spine to just deteriorate. She had fracture after fracture even though she didn’t have any back injuries to cause them.

I had an overactive thyroid back in 1977. It was killed with a radioactive iodine shot in 1978. Been on synthroid ever since. No problems except for a gout attack in the knee two months ago.

This is another one of those drugs that starts off with “Ask you doctor if ________ is right for you!’

And ends three years later with, “If you or your loved one were prescribed __________, call Sue, Settle, & Monee at 1800-Get-Cash (ext. Now).

I’ve found that whiskey contributes to bone loss, but that natural remedies such as oysters fortify and attenuate bonage.

So many elderly people suffer from muscle loss and bone loss because of lack of daily exercise and maximum protein intake.

I’m 59 and in the gym 4 days a week lifting heavy to build muscle and stay strong for the future me. I also take Thyroid meds. Having my Thyroid at healthy levels helps me feel better and then I fell like doing more.

I just wonder about these studies. Were the people with bone loss healthy active people?

had to have my thyroid removed about 22 yrs ago, because of years of exposure to Ionizing radiation it was growing nodules on it. i was prescribed Levothyroxine and still take it, but they also prescribed calcium supplements because without the thyroid you no longer regulate blood calcium. maybe that is the key, I'm in my 60s and all xrays have shown my bones are still strong

Good for you on the heavy resistance training and protein intake; most people your age don’t do either, I do, and I got 9 years on you.
A lot of people miss the fact that both of those things increase bone density.
Good work
