The Surprising Impact of North Carolina’s New Voter ID Law
The New York Times ^ | Nov. 23, 2024 | Michael Wines

After more than a decade of court battles and legislative jousting over voting rules, North Carolina this month held its first general election under its new voter ID law.

And unlike the pitched battles of the past, it felt like a fight that had largely been fought to a draw, with a more muted ID requirement, and very few ballots that were disqualified.

In 2013, when North Carolina’s Republican-run State Legislature first required voters to pull out a photo ID card before casting a ballot, it stirred a hornet’s nest of protest that the real goal was to keep nonwhite, mostly Democratic, voters from the polls.

Years of litigation followed. When a federal court struck down the law in 2016, the opinion highlighted the ID requirement as one of several provisions that targeted Black voters “with almost surgical precision.”

This month, voters cast 5.7 million ballots under a new Republican-written voter ID law. How things have changed: Now, North Carolina’s law is being criticized by some on the right as too weak and porous, though the vote went smoothly.

The law — approved in 2018 but stalled by court battles until last year — requires both in-person and mail voters to show proof of identity. That departs from most laws that require an ID only at the polls.

But unlike the 2013 law, it offers voters an array of acceptable ID cards, from drivers licenses to student IDs to free state ID cards. If voters have no ID — older people who do not have a driver’s license and mail voters who do not have printers to copy their IDs, among many others — they can ensure their ballots count with the affidavit of explanation, or can show an ID later at a local elections office.

Arizona only requires ID if voting in person. 80% vote by mail with no ID, only a “signature”.

The “surprise” was that the above was nowhere near true.
This is what sane folks tried to explain for 9 years.

The only ones “surprised” were lefty newsies like WRAL and the Charlotte Observer.

“I look like a demented escapee from “THE HOME”

When I received my latest ID picture it was when the state was promoting neutral face. I think they changed it back to a smile if you want to... anyway whenever I show my ID sometimes they look at me and then they look at the ID and they’ll look at me again and I’ll tell them that the picture was taken the day after I got out of prison.

Here in Ohio I presented my drivers license only for the election worker to point out that it had expired a week before, on my birthday. Went home and retrieved my passport. Presented to the same worker, who was pleasant and understanding through the whole exercise. Checked the paper ballot the machine (NOT Dominion) produced to verify my selections, then that was fed into another machine. Fast and efficient with a paper trail.

Student ID? Sometimes it seems like half our college students are illegals.

Student ID? Sometimes it seems like half our college students are illegals.

Not to mention that most of them aren't even permanent residents of the area where the college is located.

My college town passes every woke thing that is presented because the woke college brats all vote for it.

“The only ones “surprised” were lefty newsies like WRAL and the Charlotte Observer.”

Thanks for the specific elaboration.

The word “surprise” often appears in headlines. It suggests that some notable new information will be available to those who continue reading. Often, the surprise is that something the leftist loons believed was not true. Surprise, there are only two sexes. Surprise, MAGA people are not monsters. etc.

Why has the RNC taken its eyes off of the 2 red area seats in CA? Pelosi’s daughter is curing ballots right now…how in the hell is that not a tall tale sign the freaking rats are going to steal those two California redistrict seats. And nobody is batting an eyelash! Lara Trump and Whatley where the hell are you?

My reaction voting here in North Carolina was exactly the same as yours. We passed this by statewide referendum in 2018. Its ridiculous that it took this long to implement.

Thank goodness that one does not need an ID to get a cell phone.

I just can’t figure out how morons who can’t afford an I.D. can walk around with two or three thousand dollar cellphones.

That’s the NYT again, insulting minorities by asserting They’re too stupid and incapable of getting IDs.

, I’ll just say I’m a white dude, but if I wasn’t, I would be so insulted By the way, the white liberal elite looks down on the minorities

Yeah, and go figure with a wired tight election process, Ohio votes like eight points in Trump’s favor

It seems like the flimsier the voting laws, The more likely the state is to be voting blue.

It took so long, because every left wing scumbag east of the Mississippi was trying to block it from being implemented, you know, because of Black people not getting IDs or some BS like that

But unlike the 2013 law, it offers voters an array of acceptable ID cards, from drivers licenses to student IDs to free state ID cards.

When I voted in Kentucky I was appalled to see that a credit card was an acceptable form of ID since I don't think it's too hard for an illegal to get a credit card.

Of course, it doesn't make much difference here because Trump won nearly 65-35.

Yes it’s insulting but at the same time it is devious and dishonest. They don’t want ID because they know it makes it harder to cheat. The NYT is hiding behind the brazen lie claiming they are standing against racism
