The last time MPs voted on the question of assisted dying - nearly three quarters were against it.
Nine years later - polling suggests two thirds of the country would back a change in the law.
That ratio is mirrored in the number of cabinet ministers who've so far publicly declared their position, with 10 for and five against (only nine have obeyed the instruction from Cabinet Secretary Simon Case not to get involved).
But the bill's cabinet opponents have made some of the most high-profile interventions in the debate.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting and Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood are the two individuals who would be most responsible for seeing the legislation translate into practical reality for the NHS and court system.
They've raised similar concerns about the safeguards in place around vulnerable patients feeling pressured or coerced into taking their own lives.

There will be a debate and a vote on this in parliament. It will be a FREE vote i.e gov't and Starmer won't make any demands. Starmer has supported it in the past.
Totally against it. If you want to off yourself then do it yourself. Legalizing murder (even though that’s abortion in a nutshell) by doctor is a bridge too far.
I’m all for liberals punching the time clock as soon as they’re ready to punch out. The earlier, the better.
People who make this choice are dead to me.
Don’t do it. Getting the Government involved they get to control the narrative and can later decide if one should live or die as they see fit.
First will come voluntary “assissted-dying”, AKA “suicide.”
Then will come involuntary “assissted-dying”, AKA “the final solution.”
The real issue is who decides. Do we want govt to decide?
Lets face it. Assisted dying has been part of man’s history and culture for a long time. It has even been in the movies.
When my 99 year old mother was in the hospital and there was no further hope. The doctors suggested to give her more morphine to ease the pain. We knew what that was about.
WHO DECIDES?
What makes it even worse in places like the UK and Canada is that with socialized medicine, the State has a financial stake in encouraging assisted suicide. That is one reason why the rates under Canada’s MAID program (where people have been euthanized for being on financial straits, for instance) is many times the rates in places like Oregon and California.
Both pre and post breathing air.
Assisted dying is for attention whores and cowards.
Interesting. You have to learn to read between the lines.
Why? Fentanyl is cheap and plentiful for now. If someone wants to off themselves, let them figure out how to get some and do the job before anyone with Narcan finds them still alive. The State shouldn’t sanction or cover it.
I agree.
Indeed.
I think the part that bothers me the most is the “assisted” part.
I don’t recommend that anyone ever jump off a bridge or take other such steps. I think that’s a mistake. However, if someone makes that choice, drives themself to the bridge (so to speak), climbs up on the railing, and hurls themself off, then that’s their choice, and I am all about people making their own choices.
Getting the government involved? Not a good idea.
Asking someone to help you? Because you are old and weak and sick and cannot manage to do it yourself? I think you missed your chance and should not involve other people in this abomination.
If it’s solo, then it’s your business. But if you need assistance then you are dragging other people down with you and that’s wrong.
I don’t think people get it. They’re going to vote it in - then hand YOU the Dixie-cup of kool-aid.
COVID, child-sterilization, MAID - the trend is obvious.
I believe the NAZIS had something similar as did the NKVD of the Commies.
When the Netherlands legalized euthanasia old people feared to go to the doctor. They feared the doctor would decide for himself the old person had “no quality of life left” and kill them.
Reminds me of an old SI-FI story I read maybe 55 years ago.
‘Repent, Harlequin!’ Said the Ticktockman.” By Harlan Ellison

He controlled everyone’s life span and deducted from it every moment you were late for an appointment.
Give the power to government to “compassionately” kill you and they will..... whether you like it or not.
You stole 20 dollars from me. I saw you do it!
