This is a tough message to write, because we’ve all heard so much about this topic, and it’s nearly impossible to get a straight answer from government officials or internet searches. I’m talking about the devastation in Appalachia from Hurricane Helene.
I’ve followed this story from the beginning and put together a file of information that I found to be valid and confirmed. So, what I’m about to share with you is what we know, and much of this comes directly from people who are, or have been, in the area — either residents of the area or those from other parts who have participated in rescue, cleanup and directly helping survivors.
Hurricane Helene was a huge, catastrophic tropical cyclone that made landfall on September 26 in Northwestern Florida. It then moved inland, causing devastation in Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina. Three hours after striking central Georgia, the storm abruptly turned northwest and hit the Appalachian Mountains with 180-mile-per-hour winds. This, after dumping huge amounts of rainfall on the area for approximately three days prior. Rainfall in eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina ranged from one foot to over three feet in three days, causing unprecedented flooding and landslides.
At this time, I cannot get an accurate death count. It’s unlikely we ever will. Government agencies are simply stating it was more than 230 people killed in total — in four states. Locals in North Carolina, however, report the number in that state alone is in the thousands, perhaps in the tens of thousands. Many, if not most of the bodies of those killed will never be recovered, buried under 30 feet of mud from landslides, after being torn apart and washed away.

The concept of Appalachia is in fact mostly ignorant garbage. The areas in East Tennessee and Western NC are not the stereotypical Appalachian residents that lefties love to exploit politically

Somehow the state and town-level governments aren’t bothering to tally their dead?
I think the story is clickbait, as other’s have pointed out.
However, I’m sure help is needed.
If you want to help, donating to Samaritan’s Purse is a good place to start. After Cat5 Hurricane Michael hit the FL. panhandle in 2018, they stayed for a couple of years helping with cleanup. They are a true charity and are not just a moneymaking front paying big salaries and helping few.

Remember the rule of thumb in a totalitarian regime is whatever the reported fatality number is, add a zero!
Most people have bank accounts so you can look at the number of suddenly inactive bank accounts from people based in that area.
Cell phone accounts...how many people’s cell phone accounts are not being used or have gone inactive.
Social Security Checks...while they are deposited, the social security officials will definitely want to ascertain who in those regions aren’t alive anymore to spend the money that has been being deposited into suddenly inactive bank accounts. Also what can also be tracked are the amounts and the persons from whom social security withholdings from pay checks have suddenly stopped.
Fed and State and FICA medicare and SS withholdings that came from now dead but unknown and missing non retired persons who lived in that region can be known and the numbers of such tallied...
Utility bills...who isn’t paying their electric, gas or propane bills. Include water and sewer, for some areas if customers didn’t have their own wells or septic tanks.
Unlike the 1972 Agnes floods in that, especially with what occurred in the mountains of Va in 1972, the numbers and Identities of the dead in the 2024 floods can now be so precisely tracked and found out...certainly not in a few days but in some weeks and within a few months surely. People are so much more tied into the systems and the instantaneous databases that undergird our society!
The numbers of the dead and who they were, are probably mostly known already but there is no way the powers that be will release that info officially right now,,,till Biden skedaddles his office.
Yes it is probably in the thousands.
Smart people who know how to monitor the Cell phone traffic and patterns of subscriptions and dropped services gave us the first clues of how many people may have died in China in the first months of the Covid 19 virus. They can do the same for the Appalachian floods!

The BEST coverage is on Sundance’s ‘Conservative ‘Treehouse’...bar none. Search on ‘Tennessee” or North Carolina’...you’ll bring up a thread with over 1600 posts from people on the ground, with loads of horrifying stories and videos. This is a great source for the four or five Freepers still interested in this story. With I-26 now open (one lane), you can now get a good look at Impact Plastics where a number of people drowned...the debris field is shocking. You can drive by the lot where my HOME used to be (it was on one side of the interstate, now it is a pile of kindling on the other side).
There really are people who believe this clap trap? Use a little discretion and discernment.
Dead or unemployed?
There are a surprising number of people in Appalachia who believe this event was ‘enhanced’. Who knows?

I’m with you, if there were over 100 people still missing, I don’t believe it could be hidden. Not disputing anyone’s report, and there will certainly be bodies never recovered, but thousands?
And on the land grab speculation, it’s certain to make some people angry when where their house stood is now an unbuildable mud flat - or now, half of your land is IN the river. It can never be fully replaced. I can see a lot of ‘eminent domain’ actions though, putting back together the roads and utilities. I’m hoping the Trump admin makes this a priority to help these folks.
...yet Florida Freepers were pissing in their pants when they heard Milton with its 180 MPH winds was heading their way...have you ever BEEN in the hollers and gorges of the Blue Ridge? The ‘funnel effect’ makes this a possibility...
There were people in Erwin that thought my wife and I were dead until we turned up at a town shelter several days later. (We had left town to stay with a friend.)
There’s going to be a lot of that, it will take quite a while to sort everything out. Unlike all his predecessors, I hope Trump releases the actual true number.

Thank you for the idea to go to conservative treehouse for more info. I will check that out this afternoon. WNC is never far from my thoughts. I have a dear friend in Hendersonville who was very lucky… and now she and her husband spend their time volunteering at a local church and helping neighbors who weren’t as fortunate.

I concur. If they find thousands of bodies….you really can’t argue with the proof.
