This is a tough message to write, because we’ve all heard so much about this topic, and it’s nearly impossible to get a straight answer from government officials or internet searches. I’m talking about the devastation in Appalachia from Hurricane Helene.
I’ve followed this story from the beginning and put together a file of information that I found to be valid and confirmed. So, what I’m about to share with you is what we know, and much of this comes directly from people who are, or have been, in the area — either residents of the area or those from other parts who have participated in rescue, cleanup and directly helping survivors.
Hurricane Helene was a huge, catastrophic tropical cyclone that made landfall on September 26 in Northwestern Florida. It then moved inland, causing devastation in Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina. Three hours after striking central Georgia, the storm abruptly turned northwest and hit the Appalachian Mountains with 180-mile-per-hour winds. This, after dumping huge amounts of rainfall on the area for approximately three days prior. Rainfall in eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina ranged from one foot to over three feet in three days, causing unprecedented flooding and landslides.
At this time, I cannot get an accurate death count. It’s unlikely we ever will. Government agencies are simply stating it was more than 230 people killed in total — in four states. Locals in North Carolina, however, report the number in that state alone is in the thousands, perhaps in the tens of thousands. Many, if not most of the bodies of those killed will never be recovered, buried under 30 feet of mud from landslides, after being torn apart and washed away.

Nonsense. This is just click bait. There aren’t that many dead. You can’t hide that many dead people.
Hitler did.
Stalin did.
Then why do we know about it? I live in a FEMA area from Helene. You cannot have thousands of people dead without funerals or people asking what happened to them.
A minute ago you said we don’t know about it.
Tens of thousands of bodies that haven’t been recovered would be obvious. The smell alone would be noticeable for miles. People would be lined up on the side of the street with signs, looking for their loved ones. Morgues would be digging slit trenches to bury the dead.
240 deaths seems “reasonable.” It is likely that some were swept away and they lie under a few feet of silt.
Tens of thousands is hyperbole, designed to evoke an emotional reaction. It literally doesn’t pass the smell test.
We know about Hitler and Stalin. We also know that many people didn’t die in NC due to Helene.
180 mph winds? Nonsense.
This Guy personally has absolutely no independent information about such claims.
Nevertheless there’s also this report:

The situation in North Carolina is extremely dire. I’ve seen the TikTok videos and tweets on X painting an apocalyptic picture. But it can sometimes be difficult to discern the real story vs Internet sensationalism. Since COVID, I’ve tried to not drawn any conclusions other than what I perceive with my own senses or hear directly from trusted colleagues & friends.
At any rate, I expected a few thousand to be dead in western NC, but in speaking with a friend last night, I realized that I had really low-balled the number.
Backstory: my friend is also a nurse anesthetist. She resides in Florida but is doing a “travel assignment” at a hospital in North Carolina (she started there before Helene hit). The following is what she has told me:
“Other CRNAs have been involved in the plane program, flying in shipments from private organizations to drop zones in the mountains. They fly to different bases, some in NC, some in Tennessee, even to a jail!… to pick up supplies then are flying them directly to the remote areas. Plane only can hold 1800lb of supplies. So they make 5 trips in 9 hours…each day. They drop off epi, insulin, meds, food, water, etc. they said the people flock to the plane like a third world country. Thousands are still stuck there with no way out, impoverished people with medical needs, no heat (it’s getting cold at night), no electricity, etc. no FEMA there. One PACU nurse’s husband went on the ground there to help. She said he came back in a state like she’s never seen. Dead babies in trees, hanging in branches, bodies everywhere, but the people in trees, no one can get to. There’s no ladder tall enough. He is traumatized. My coworkers whose husbands work for fire rescue in NC said the body count for the flooding is 13,000 or more. Not 250.”
My concern now is disease outbreak in the coming weeks without accessibility to clean water. Please pray for these suffering souls.
And the media yawns.
Compare the news coverage to hurricane Helene (Biden regime) to hurricane Katrina (George Bush admin).
Both storms caused massive destruction and deaths. With Katrina, the death count was due to the levies breaking and overflowing flood waters (malfeasance by Louisiana DEMOCRAT officials for squandering the $billions in money they got for the Army Core of Engineers to shore up the dams). But yet, the media blamed Bush personally for the deaths. This went on for weeks and months, criticizing and blaming Bush for Katrina.
Now hurricane Helene devastates four states, and not a peep from the media. NO ONE even mentions the terrible response from Biden. It’s as it never happened.
Hate people who use a real disaster to lie and further their own agenda. The real thing to worry about is the government buying the land from the people impacted. That could change Appalachia forever. You have the beauty, but the people and culture are what make Appalachia. Rumors gave the State and Federal Governments wanting to buy up the affected land to either restrict access like in California or to profit off minerals.
“240 deaths seems “reasonable.” It is likely that some were swept away and they lie under a few feet of silt.
“Tens of thousands is hyperbole, designed to evoke an emotional reaction. It literally doesn’t pass the smell test.”
_______________
Generally agree with this.
Willing to consider contravening information though. Particularly if the “receipts are brought”....which frankly has not happened yet.
Maybe. On the other hand “funneling effect” is a well known meteorological phenomenon that takes place in mountain valleys, which is basically Appalachia.
The media and their party politicized Hurricanes for years.
Aftermath of Hurricane Andrew was GHW Bush’s fault.
Katrina was GW Bush’s fault.
Rita was ignored. Hit the mostly white part of Louisiana/Texas.
“I live in a FEMA area”
Then maybe you know the answer to a question.
On Twitter people keep claiming there’s lithium at King’s Mountain and big companies wanted the people around there to leave.
Problem is King’s Mountain is in the Charlotte/Gastonia area, miles away from Asheville and the rest of the disaster zone.
So the theory doesn’t make much sense.
Am I missing part of the story?
I think they mean Spruce Pine
Not while Hitler or Stalin were alive we didn’t.
Well, the total is incorrect by a tremendous margin.
The number of dead is actually an irrelevant measure. The correct measure is the damage to infrastructure and homes. People in the affected areas foolishly built homes and even towns on the flood plain. The buildings are in many instances, just gone. In a similar manner, the Clinchfield railroad was built on the flood plain through the Nolichucky gorge. Miles and miles of trackage and several bridges are just gone. The damage to more rural roads and many many bridges is to large to effectively quantify.
Interstates I 40 from Knoxville to Asheville is closed and it might be a very long time before it is restored. Interstate 26 from Erwin Tennessee to Ashville NC was closed because of a bridge out. Traffic is now moving but there is a bottleneck at the destroyed bridge.
Having said all that, there is in fact severe damage and destruction that will require years to recover. Any attempt to quantify the widely dispersed destruction is a vain attempt to grasp such an extreme disaster
We’ve seen none of that. What we are seeing is people being told they can’t rebuild in areas that were destroyed. In our case, it was trailer parks/campgrounds on the New River. These were intended to be seasonal camping but it turned into permanent housing.
