Making cowardly Senate Republicans pay a political price
The Washington Post ^ | November 19, 2024 7:45 AM EST | Jennifer Rubin

As justifiably alarmed as Democrats are by President-elect Donald Trump’s radical agenda and his nominations of unqualified candidates for Cabinet positions, these actions may be even more terrifying for Republican senators up for reelection in 2026. (What follows certainly applies to vulnerable GOP House members as well, although they, of course, play no role in confirming nominees.)

The 2026 map is somewhat more favorable to Democrats than it was in 2024. For example, the reelection campaigns of Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Thom Tillis of North Carolina will be two of the most hotly contested races. While they hail from comfortably red states, less rabid Republican Sens.Steve Daines of Montana, Mike Rounds of South Dakota and John Cornyn of Texas will also face the voters. That raises a host of questions. Will Collins, who said she was “shocked” at Matt Gaetz’s nomination for attorney general, wind up voting to confirm him or, worse, voting to adjourn the Senate to hide from her constitutional obligations? When it comes to mass immigrant roundups, will Cornyn lift a finger to prevent raids that snare hardworking Texans, disrupt businesses and break up families? Meanwhile, Daines, Rounds and other Republican senators from farming states will have to decide whether to remain mute when across-the-board tariffs drive up farm bankruptcies and destroy the rural economy.

In short, Republicans will face a dilemma time and again during the Trump presidency: Go along with the White House or stand up for their constituents. If they choose the latter, they certainly face the potential for a primary challenge from a MAGA Republican. Do they fear appearing too extreme to voters in the general election more than they fear such a challenge? If it’s the general electorate that worries them, they may choose to buck...

Those constituents overwhelmingly voted for Trump, you idiot.

I see Jennifer Rubin is still spewing crap for the Washington Post. Couldn’t resign as promised, though she has dropped out of X(Twitter), where she was not apparently being paid for these pearls of wisdom.

The Compost is ignoring the fact that President Trump ran ahead of Senate Republican candidates.

He carried them on his back.

Even the dumbest of Republican Senators knows what that means.

In case you don’t know her, Jennifer Rubin is a blogger who styles herself the “house conservative” at the Washington Post. While I generally disregard her hate-filled screeds, I have yet to see anything Rubin writes that I would call “conservative” and I reject her warmongering blather as constituting anything “conservative” or populist.

I despise Cornyn. I hope he gets primary’d.

Same with Collins.

Maybe only Murkowski is more contemptible.

Rubin wants to “conserve” leftist victories.

“Those constituents overwhelmingly voted for Trump, you idiot.”

Exactly right... That particular line is psyops... It opens the door for “I had to go against Trump because of my constituents”.

Since when have they cared about “their constituents?”, Never... Only themselves once they are elected up until the last days before an election. Until then they defy their constituents left and right and could care less what we think.

And they are going to do it again...

Authors first few words are a huge turn off from reading further.
If they dealt in truth, there is no justifiable reason to have been alarmed by a Trump win. Instead they cheat lie and choose to believe only what they feel comfortable hearing, that is why they were alarmed by Trump’s win.

She is also preternaturally stupid. During the 2016 primaries, she mostly attacked Cruz because she didn’t take Trump seriously as someone who would win the nomination. Even Cruz was to unrefined for her taste.

Jennifer has always been a screeching lunatic who claimed some “conservative” branding by tub-beating for every foreign war the deep state wanted to spend American blood and treasure on for the past forty years.

She’s been trying to remain relevant by leaning in to the never-Trump ethos in Washington. It’s not working.

Absolutely. In what was arguably a landslide for Trump and the Republicans based on their policies and agenda, the Republicans SHOULD listen to their constituents. Funny that a libtard “journalist” would argue that....

Some senators are kinda slow—they made to be reminded a bit of what is happening outside their window...

So it appears the communist talking points regarding Trump’s picks includes “unqualified” as well as inexperienced.

And I say these talking points are spot on. The picks are unqualified because they are not communists and they are inexperienced because they are not corrupt.

They also know Charlie Kirk and Turning Point Action were an important part of Trump’s success. Charlie has promised primary opposition for any Senators who voted for Garland, who don’t vote for Gaetz. This is not an empty threat, even if a Senator thinks he’s safe.
