Shaquille O'Neal points the finger: Stephen Curry's 3-point revolution is ruining the NBA

Shaquille O'Neal says he's bored with basketball. The former Los Angeles Lakers center reacted to a recent report about the NBA's declining ratings by claiming that the league has become too predictable-and he quickly pointed to Stephen Curry, the master of three-pointers, as the reason.

According to a report by Sports Media Watch, ratings for the first two days of the 2024-2025 NBA season dropped by as much as 47% compared to last year, depending on the game.

O'Neal didn't hold back on finding a reason for the ratings decline. On the latest episode of "The Big Podcast with Shaq," the three-time NBA champion claimed that the game has become too predictable and "boring," which he believes is why fans have stopped tuning in.

"I have a theory," Shaq told co-host Adam Lefkoe. "It's down because we're looking at the same thing. Everybody's running the same plays. At the top of the key, dribble handoff," he asserted.

Blaming Stephen Curry The Big Aristotle played in an era dominated by giants like Hakeem Olajuwon, Yao Ming, Ben Wallace, Karl Malone, Tim Duncan, and David Robinson, who ruled the NBA in the '90s and early 2000s. So it's no surprise that O'Neal isn't impressed with a game increasingly led by sharpshooters.

"Steph Curry and those guys messed it up," he said. "I didn't mind Golden State back in the day shooting threes, but not every team is a three-point shooter, so why does everybody have the same strategy?"

How about Palming the Ball?

Maybe the ball should be 25% bigger, or so.

Rim the same size (maybe higher).

I watched a hockey game on TV a few years ago. The color analyst was a former Islander from the 80s.

The subject of loud crowds and venues came up. The Islander dude said basically that he still has PTSD when the Spectrum comes up in conversation.

My ears rang for days after seeing Van Halen there. Good times. Wells Fargo is nicer, but it lacks the character of the Spectrum.

The population has been changing such that players have developed to master the rules. There were very few men 6 foot 6 and higher when the game was invented. Change the games rules to make the game difficult for the relative larger size, and skills of the modern players.

pro basketball is boring. No defense. No strategy. No epic match ups. Just run and gun.

Never learned to play the game, never had any interest in watching overpaid morons play it.

Brother loves watching sports, I find it like watching paint dry.

Football at one time was fascinating, but got political

When people found out that the NBA kowtowed to communist China 🇨🇳 instead of putting American fans first, people stopped watching.

I don’t go to a Trump rally to watch him play Eruption or shoot hoops.

Of course not. That would be silly.

It’s to see him dance…..

Ironically, it was in the Shaq era that every play looked the same, and had the same outcome. It was like watching people swin laps. Run down the court, penetrate to the basket, shoot, score! Run down the court, penetrate to the basket, shoot, score! A slam dunk is exciting when the dunker is 5’11” or even 6’4”, but not when he’s 7’6”. And tip-ins? No thanks.

Shaq is a great person, but boring as Hell to watch.

Any of the three true outcomes makes for a boring game. Yes, including random home runs. Base hits, stolen bases and the occasional shocking home run... that’s exciting baseball. Endless walks, strike-outs and three-second scoring.... yawn!

ratings for the first two days of the 2024-2025 NBA season dropped

I thought they were still in the playoffs of the 2023-2024 season.
