BUT, Desantis can appoint Gaetz as a placeholder until 2026 when Desantis can run for the seat; he’s term-limited as Governor, the senate seat would keep him in the public eye until he runs for POTUS.

“I don’t think Gaetz can win statewide, whenever the election is held.”

Uh, Florida is RED!!!

“There would be a special election to fill out the term, likely on election day, 2026, or earlier.”

Look it up and I agree, unless something really weird happens, whoever Rubio appoints will stay in the Senate the next General Election, which is Election Day, 2026, as you’re saying.

I’m not clear about how recess appointments work. Does the Senate have to recess after Trump has been inaugurated for his cabinet picks to get in through recess appointment or would recess appointment also apply to his choices if the Senate went into recess before he is inaugurated?

That would be a great move.

Would Desantis appoint him?

Possibly.

Matt Gaetz managed DeSantis' transition team when he was elected governor. He has called DeSantis “the best governor in America” and has said he would've been the Republican Party’s presidential nominee in 2024 had Trump not jumped into the race.

It's widely expected that DeSantis will fill Rubio's post with a loyalist.

Gaetz would fit this requirement.

This would actually work out very well.

I don't see DeSantis with a spot in Trump's administration. I just don't think he's a great fit and I'd bet both men agree.

The Senate would be a natural progression for DeSantis and he'd win in a landslide.

Gaetz might not win in a landslide.

It appears the nominations must be made by a sitting president not just the president-elect for recess appointments to take place. That means the Senate will have to recess after 1/20/2025. I think it’s in session at the time of inauguration.

He would fill Rubio’s remaining term, which does not end until January 2029.

“He would fill Rubio’s remaining term, which does not end until January 2029.”

Thanks, but I think the answer is almost what you say, but instead Nov. 2028, so good enough to not have to worry about the seat until then.

Florida is red ... but that doesn’t mean we can expect to nominate clowns and not get burned. Picking Gaetz would be yet another example — in what is a distressingly long list — of how to throw away a presumptively winnable seat.

Yes, I agree. But the threat of Gaetz being in THEIR Senate is delicious!
