Senator John Thune of South Dakota will succeed Mitch McConnell as the party’s leader in the chamber. Mr. Biden hosted his successor at the White House, a courtesy Mr. Trump did not extend to him after losing in 2020.
Trump takes a victory lap in Washington.
President-elect Donald J. Trump met in the Oval Office with President Biden on Wednesday, a triumphant return to the seat of American power that he grudgingly left four years ago.
The meeting came at the invitation of Mr. Biden, who honored the decades-old tradition in which the outgoing president hosts the incoming one — a display of respect that Mr. Trump did not extend to Mr. Biden while denying that he had lost in 2020.
Republican Senators Elect Thune as Next Majority Leader
Republicans on Wednesday elected Senator John Thune of South Dakota, their No. 2 in the chamber, to serve as majority leader in the next Congress, choosing a G.O.P. institutionalist to replace Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Senate’s longest-serving leader.
In elevating Mr. Thune, 63, G.O.P. senators turned to a traditional Republican in the mold of Mr. McConnell, and rejected a challenger more aligned with President-elect Donald J. Trump’s Make America Great Again movement.

After Senator Thune's victory, Cornyn moved to make the vote unanimous, according to a person familiar with the discussion in the room.

Thune is a major Rino and swamp creature. Too bad he comes from good people in South Dakota. I knew his uncle and went to high school with his cousins.

Trump is making the same mistakes he made the first time, surrounding himself with a cabinet of backstabbers.
