Donald Trump selected U.S. Senator Marco Rubio to be his secretary of state, the New York Times reported on Monday, putting the Florida-born politician on track to be the first Latino to serve as America's top diplomat once the Republican president-elect takes office in January.
Rubio was arguably the most hawkish option on Trump's shortlist for secretary of state, and he has in years past advocated for a muscular foreign policy with respect to America's geopolitical foes, including China, Iran and Cuba.
Over the last several years he has softened some of his stances to align more closely with Trump's views. The president-elect accuses past U.S. presidents of leading America into costly and futile wars and has pushed for a more restrained foreign policy.
The new administration will confront a world more volatile and dangerous than it was when Trump took office in 2017, with wars raging in Ukraine and the Middle East and China aligning itself more closely with U.S. foes Russia and Iran.
The Ukraine crisis will be high on Rubio's agenda.
Rubio, 53, has said in recent interviews that Ukraine needs to seek a negotiated settlement with Russia rather than focus on regaining all territory that Russia has taken in the last decade. He was also one of 15 Republican senators to vote against a $95 billion military aid package for Ukraine, passed in April.

I’ll believe it when Trump confirms it and not before.
Trump does not desire an echo chamber. He wants a wider range of opinions. Rubio is close enough. Trump doesn’t need litmus tests, loyalty is the important consideration, Rubio’s not stupid he won’t a game for himself.. It also is a confirmation position, the shaky Senate will not be an issue. You can’t make every single position a battle royale with the corrupt Senate.
I don’t blame you, but it sure beats the people he had the first go around.
I just call ‘em like I see ‘em. He was the republican establishment pick for President for 2024. I hope he doesn’t mess this up with a never-Trump appointment that’s all.
Rubio has been pretty good for the last few years.
I certainly hope there are some plans to rectify our Latin America policy, and make sure we keep the Russians and ChiComs out. And yes, freeing Cuba is something that needs to be done. 60+ years is enough.
I am not so worried knowing most likely it will be Vance in 2028.
We’ll see how it turns out.
One thing’s for sure, beyond the slightest hint of a shadow of a doubt:
Trump’s worst pick will be less bad than the least bad Harris pick. We dodged (metaphorical) saturation nuclear bombing by defeating that < expletive deleted >.
I just saw his exploits a few short years ago. Seemed pretty establishment. He was trying to take out Trump for crissakes.
Nice to have your optimism sh!tting all over this thread.
Truth is truth, little one.
Learn to deal with it.
Ha! Nice to have your “hope”. I’ll sleep better.
Seek help.
too late
“the first Latino to serve as America’s top diplomat”
Rubio is under the microscope.
Awful, awful, awful.
“Name-calling, stereotyping, and childish insults do not substitute for rational thought and intelligent discussion”
Recognize that? Truce brother.
Wait a second, how did the NYTs get the scoop?
“Name-calling, stereotyping, and childish insults do not substitute for rational thought and intelligent discussion”
Recognize that? Truce brother. I’m a little sensitive with PDJT criticism at this moment. Sorry.
Interesting. Maybe one of the considerations is that since many of the ilegals are from Latin America, it’s good to tap someone who speak their language. Also, with families from Cuban, he is quite anti communist.
“Yes the Governor appoints the replacement to fill out the term for the senate”
Desantis should name himself.
