Serum zinc is often deficient in patients with liver cirrhosis and hepatic encephalopathy (HE), according to a study.
Divakar Kumar, M.D. and colleagues measured the serum zinc level in 150 patients with liver cirrhosis with HE.
The researchers found that the majority of patients with liver cirrhosis with HE had zinc deficiency. There was a statistically significant association between low serum zinc levels and West Haven criteria grades of HE. Across classes of cirrhosis, serum zinc levels showed highly significant differences. In patients who died, the mean serum zinc level was significantly low (35.56 versus 48.36). There was a strong positive correlation between serum zinc and serum albumin levels (r = 0.88).
"All patients with liver cirrhosis with HE and hypoalbuminemia should be evaluated for zinc deficiency. Hypozincemia is significantly associated with mortality in HE so it can also be used as a prognostic marker," the authors write.
"Early screening for serum zinc level in patients with liver cirrhosis with HE and its replacement could result in prevention of worsening of HE and can also be used in treatment of HE, which can be proved by larger study particularly a case control study or randomized control trial."

Zinc testing may be of help, but some believe serum zinc is not an accurate measure of zinc.
Regardless, these tests are available and you can add up your zinc intake with nutrition calculators. Do note a ratio of 7.5 mg zinc to 1 mg of copper is the idealized ratio. Coper and zinc work against each other, so having too much of one can drive out the other from your body.
Definitely get a zinc supplement with copper to balance one another.
Bro, besides the obvious, what helps with weight loss.
Head injury now over 17 years ago and I put on a LOT the 5 years after.
Haven’t gained or lost since.
It’d be great if there were natural things to take to curb the hormones that drive appetite.
Hope you are well :)
Many people are already likely getting more copper than they realize.

My friend, you likely need more fiber.
Start getting psyllium and having five grams of it about 15-20 minutes before eating. Additionally, swap out all normal bread for keto-type bread. Try Sola Bread or Sola Blu-berry bagels. Also, consider trying Hero bread. There are other brands, but you have to keep the inulin fiber levels low. If these don’t work, try others.
Increase your fiber to at least 38 grams a day, but no more than 50. Men up to 50 are supposed to get 38 grams a day. I added mine up and realized I was getting about 18 grams a day, before.
You need psyllium and modified or resistant wheat starch-type fiber, both. The latter lets the bacteria in your gut make substances to help heal and normalize some body functions, through your blood. Psyllium helps in separate ways.
Cut down on all of your simple sugars and starches, in favor of lower carb, but tasty, veggies. Even green peas are a great option. Put olive oil and a bit of salt on them after microwaving. Yum! These have a very low Glycemic Index number and have additional fiber.
Stop drinking drinks you have to have too sweetened. Try Enlightened ice yogurt bars for a dessert.
Try to get more active, too. Any activity helps.
Try fasting, as well.
From copper clad cookware?
Webb: “That figures. Now let me see if I got the facts straight here. Cleaning woman Clara Clifford discovered your clean copper clappers kept in a closet were copped by Claude Cooper the kleptomaniac from Cleveland. Now, is that about it?”
Carson: “One other thing.”
Webb: “What’s that?”
Carson: “If I ever catch kleptomaniac Claude Cooper from Cleveland who copped my clean copper clappers kept in the closet...”
Webb: “Yes?”
Carson: “I’ll clobber him!”
I don’t recall what my zinc levels were in the years before my transplant. It would be interesting to know, now. I did have periodic liver panels done for scoring where I was on the wait list. It’s only been about 3 1/2 years, but it seems so long ago.
Cause or effect?
Johnny Carson and Jack Webb! What a classic bit that was!😂
Liver issues run in my family and we are also a family of drinkers, so I am careful about taking care of my liver. Based on my blood results, my liver looks to be an excellent shape and I think it's because of my diet that is rich in eggs and meat. I have a minimum of 3 eggs a day, as many as 6. Meat or fish every day. Oysters when I can but those are very expensive.
Doc says I may have mild fibrosis of the liver. Gotta look into this. Thanks for posting
