State investigators are probing the circumstances surrounding the death of the beloved Instagram famous P'Nut the squirrel.
The DEC is conducting an internal investigation into the controversial raid on Mark Longo's home, where both P'Nut and Fred the raccoon were seized and euthanized.
Despite Longo's claims that officers wore protective gloves, the animals were killed and decapitated for rabies testing after P'Nut allegedly bit an agent's hand.
'An internal investigation into the matter is ongoing, and we are reviewing internal policies and procedures to ensure we continue serving this core mission,' a DEC spokesperson told The New York Post on Friday.
State and local health departments, including the DEC, the state Health Department, and the Chemung County Health Department, have been tight-lipped about the rabies test results and the condition of the injured agent.

That’s not why the Longos were raided.
Meanwhile...
The turnout for the memorial was very well attended.
The really interesting bit...
I can see why the DEC would stonewall and make people go through the FOIL process.
But what does the Chemung County have to hide...?
Inquiring minds want to know.
I’m not speaking of any underlying or ulterior reason. What did the warrant actually say?
So the Chemung County Health Department knows what’s going on, but the county sheriff’s department was left out of the loop...
Okaaaaay...
I’ve only seen the first page of the application.
And that provided no answers.
Though the county sheriff’s department is mentioned...
Well, it’s illegal in most of the US (if not all) to keep wild native animals without a license.
If these people were doing that, the authorities had every right to investigate if they became aware of it.
I may not like the way this was executed, but I believe in following the law. These people ignored the rules for years, and set themselves up for this.
A SWAT event is not justified for lack of a licrnse.
And gov’t currently requires license for too many things.
We are horribly over-regulated.
bttt
God forbid that all existing laws be enforced because you would be shocked and bankrupted just trying to comply.
Ask yourself this, if this is so cut-and-dried, why make everyone FOIL for info?
In NYS, that’s not quick, easy, or inexpensive.
Jack booted thugs. This is your government.
As I’ve said, I don’t like the way this was executed, but there are very good reasons for the laws we have regarding the keeping of wildlife.
(One could as easily say that requiring a driver’s license is ‘horrible over-regulation’.)
And demanding people go through FOIL for answers?
You cool with that, too?
Why don’t the people who kept the squirrel just post the warrant?
See post 15.
I don’t think it would have ‘bankrupted’ these people to protect their pet with a license.
They just couldn’t be bothered.
They recently moved to NY from NJ, which let them have the animals. With or without paperwork, I’m not certain.
You miss the point that so many things are regulated and licrnsed that literally no one can even know all the laws and be in complete compliance.
citing potential illegal housing of squirrel and moose.
I’m surprised they didn’t shoot the owner.
