The art in espionage is the ability to hide in plain sight and the greatest of spies are the ones you never learn about.
This statement rings true in the case of Anthony Blunt.
His life seemed predestined for greatness. A Cambridge graduate with familial ties to the Royal Family, he was the very picture of establishment respectability. His brilliance as a polymath, fluency in multiple languages, and renown as a world-class art historian made him virtually untouchable, and he knew it.
Beneath this veneer of aristocratic refinement lurked a secret that would shake Britain to its very foundations. For decades, Blunt operated as a Soviet spy as a member of the so-called Cambridge Five. His position in MI5 and then within the court of the British Royal family granted him unprecedented access to top secret information at the most critical junctures of World War 2.
It took 34 years before Blunt’s treachery was finally revealed by British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. As shocking as his betrayal was to the British public, a new hypothesis suggests that he may also have been handing secrets to the Nazis which prolonged the war and cost thousands of Allied lives.
Labelling Anthony Blunt as ‘the most dangerous spy in history’ as some have done may seem hyperbolic, but when considering the information he had access to, and thus the power he held to influence the strategic balance of power, it may indeed be true.

Literally never.... happens in so many films. In every genre.
> Spies are overrated. <
Sometimes a spy is not believed because his handlers wrongly think he’s a double agent. And sometimes a spy is believed, and he’s really a double agent.
That doesn’t inspire much confidence in the trade.
Blunt was actually the last person in the world who would have wanted to live in the Soviet Union. He came from a privileged background and became the director of the Courtauld Institute of Art. He lived in a luxury apartment at the Institute, free of charge, and hobnobbed with the aristocracy. Like just about all lefties, he was a hypocrite who cared little about his fellow man.

Yup. Stalin wanted German communists installed and maintained in power by Russian bayonets. That proved fatal in the end because even the Germans eventually had enough of Soviet communism and Russian troops.
I wonder if he was friends with Kim Philby.
Let’s put it this way. Neither the FBI, CIA, MI5 or MI6 had anything to be proud of over the work they did then, nor now. That’s what I’ve got from this book.
All socialist countries become national socialst.
He recruited the rest of the Cambridge Five. His first job for the NKVD was scouting for talent. Video says it all.
Blunt was bad. He supplied the Russians with a lot of human intelligence - which can be just as valuable as military intelligence.
But my number #1 worst spies were Kim Philly, Robert Hansen and George Blake.
So am I!
It was hard to find.
I may have seen it recommended here, not sure.
“.. most dangerous spy in history.”
An exaggerated unsupported claim. Anthony Blunt was detected years earlier than Phillby whose treason could also not be measured.
Rosenbergs were chopped liver? Aldritch Ames was just a piker? They’re just counting spies who betrayed the UK. But apparently when Blunt (allegedly) told the Nazis about the parachute drop in the Netherlands, it caused the death of 17,000 of His Majesty’s forces, as well as giving the Soviets a free hand all over the Balkans and Baltics. The Netherlands assault would have gotten England and the other allies to Berlin first.
You should have labeled this a VANITY post.
when was he hanged, drawn and quartered ?
I didn’t make the video.
Never. British deep state takes care of its own. He was publicly disgraced and removed from all offices and all honors. No more knighthood, no more guardianship of royal portraits, etc.
The Rosenbergs.
