It's a question that continues to puzzle people 50 years after it happened: why did the TV show Bewitched suddenly and seemingly inexplicably replace the actor who played Darrin in the middle of its run?

There were TWO Gladys Kravits as well.
Alice Pearce died from ovarian cancer after the first two seasons and was replaced by Sandra Gould.
Bewitched was based on a movie called “I Married A Witch” with Frederic March and Veronica Lake, early 1940’s. Very funny movie.
Dick York was better-uptight. The other one was laid back.
Larry Tate was the ultimate butt kisser when it came to clients and bosses.
He was a reliable character actor and worked with a lot of people, I think he mainly worked at Warner Brothers.
That’s really sad. Dick York was by far the better Darrin.
Gladys Kravitz: “She ran into the wall...a normal person would have just thought it was an accident.”
Abner Kravitz: “But what did *you* think it was, Gladys?”
Sandra Gould played the part well...she was an excellent actress - but it seemed that role was made for Alice Pearce and Gould’s interpretation just didn’t compare.
Dick York has a back injury that was debilitating. Couldn’t continue with the role any longer.
But we all learned about the Mrs. Kravitzs’ among us..,now affectionately called Karens. No offense to the normal Karens out there.
Bernard Fox and Paul Lynn. Yup liked them both. Poor old Paul Lynn an amazing comedian but tortured soul.
Been watching it for free with ads on
FreeVee. Still on the first season,
colorized. Early appearances by later
famed actors
Raquel Welch
Bill Daily
Vic Tayback (Mel on Alice)
Bob Dornan (later CA rep, “B1 Bob”)
Paul Lynde as uncle Arthur was only in
9 episodes
“I hated Bewitched. I didn’t like either Darrin, Samantha, or the mother-in-law. And the daughter was a brat”
Yeah, but Mrs. Kravitz”s was a hoot
Yes, I totally agree, Republican Wildcat. Both actresses were wonderful.
However, I generally prefer originals and Dick York was far superior to Dick Sergeant.
Phyllis was Darrin’s mother - who did have the sick headache — usually after seeing some witchcraft.
Larry’s wife was Louise (played by 2 different actresses — maybe more)
The first thing that crossed my mind when Dick Sargent replaced Dick York was Sergeant York.
Thank you.
