These beverages are being booted.
Starbucks’ olive oil-infused drinks are being nixed just a year after being added to the menu as the company’s new CEO looks to streamline service.
Oleato products will be permanently removed from the core menu starting Nov. 7, when the Starbucks’ holiday drinks launch, according to a memo obtained by Bloomberg News.
The memo said that Starbucks is “saying goodbye to Starbucks Oleato beverages and toffee nut syrup.”
New CEO Brian Niccol, who took over the chain Sept. 9, noted that one of his priorities to accelerate growth at the company is to simplify the “overly complex” menu so baristas can speed up service.
However, according to Bloomberg, the company said that the decision to nix the Oleato drinks was made before Niccol took over, though it aligns with the plan to scale back the menu.
Oleato (Italian for “oiled”) drinks debuted in Italy in February 2023 before making their way to select California locations in March 2023, eventually becoming available nationwide on Jan. 30, 2024.
The beverages, infused with Partanna extra virgin olive oil, were the brainchild of Starbucks’ former CEO, Howard Schultz, who believed the drink was a “transformational way to enjoy our daily coffee.”
Oleato’s origin story began with Schultz’s visit to Sicily when he was introduced to the Mediterranean custom of having a daily spoonful of olive oil, according to the Starbucks website.
While enjoying his morning coffee, he had the inspiration to combine the two items.
Some consumers reported experiencing unfortunate stomach issues from the coffee-oil combo.

When I want olive oil, I’ll just cook with it. It doesn’t seem like something that belongs in coffee.
I started putting olive oil in my morning cup of coffee and it changed my cholesterol numbers in a few months. My PCP was thrilled and amazed.
It takes a bit of getting used to and it’s better if you froth it, but I’m too lazy and I don’t buy coffees, I make my own.
Stand in line for overpriced coffee? No thank you.
Right!?
I use olive oil, avocado oil, and butter in my cooking. And bacon fat, saved from the sheet pan when I roast bacon on a rack. No seed oils (canola).
Olive oil does NOT go in coffee!
Stomach issues, or somewhat further along the digestive tract?
Jackie Mason called it $5 burnt coffee in a paper cup.
Very few people go to Starbucks for coffee; most are getting their ridiculously expensive, elaborate malt-shop concoctions. I asked the clerk — er, barista — at our local Starbucks what percentage of customers order actual coffee. Her answer was “less than 10%.” I can attest that it’s very frustrating to wait in line for coffee while the clerks are busy making fancy sweet concoctions.
“Some consumers reported experiencing unfortunate stomach issues from the coffee-oil combo.”
Yeah, that was kinda predictable. They should have seen that one coming.

I never patronize Starsucks. That stupid green hippie girl logo keeps me away before I even get close to the overpriced crap they sell.
My ex mother-in-law was a health food nut. She got me to drink every morning a glass of water, lemon juice and a tsp or tbsp of olive oil, when I was pregnant. Apparently, it is a hot item now.
Which isn't often because it's infuriating getting in line behind those women with their super-complicated concoctions that take forever to make. They should have a separate line for just those who want plain coffee but I guess I'm one of the few!
Even other chains like Dunkin' Donuts are getting into those fancy coffee drinks that gum up the works because of the length of time to put them together.
Is this like the “butter coffee thing?
Coffee + butter (or ghee), now...
It does sound similar to the “bulletproof” coffee concoction - which can also inflict some gastric distress.
Reminiscent of navy coffee (sans the whiff of bunker fuel or diesel).
oh, hahahaha!!!! I have read there were benefits but I was too lazy to look it up. I read a drop in your eyes each day prevents cataracts. Putting a drop in your belly button straightens out your digestive system, things like that.
All that oil must have made for an easy delivery. ;>)
Olive oil in coffee??
I do not drink their crap, but maybe it is a laxative for all the constipated soccer moms?
“Hey there there are those of us who like dark roasted coffee.”
Not “like”; love.
.
NOW they do, yes.
But I’m not ready to give up griping about Starbucks yet.
I think that I may have been emotionally scarred by standing in lines for
too long, too many times in order to overpay for coffee I considered to be lousy.
