They must have terrible needs to show off before others and bolster their self esteem.

I just don’t remember kids being like that when I was young. We wanted to be thought well of and we enjoyed when we did something that was praised - but we didn’t need attention to this pathological extent.

When we were kids we would do some stupid stuff but there usually was one of two things that stopped us from taking it too far. One was the wrath of mom or dad who would say, “that's enough bud”. At which point you stopped or there were consequences. The other was that one wet blanket friend that would tell you that you shouldn't do it. They told you that because they were your friend and you listened for the same reason. And if you didn't, they were the one who went for help.

Kids don't have friends like that any more.

They have "media friends" people who do not give a damn if they break their heads open. In fact people who want to see it because it gives them some kind of thrill.
