"Itโs a forward operating base for long-range bombers, and a port for ships, so that navy ships can sally forth from there," said Peter Layton, a defense and aviation expert at the Griffith Asia Institute in Australia. "Certainly places in Japan and the Philippines are a lot closer (to China)... but a lot more exposed."

It might tip over
War with Russia? War with China? Which will come first? Maybe both at the same time? Before the election? Before the inauguration? Interesting times when some men just want to watch the world burn.
Would the people of Guam want some say in the beefed up militarization of the place? The other nations nearby would be a tougher sell as the Chicoms are a harder sell once money gets involved.
It looked so big in 1947. ๐๐๐ of course I was 3 months old at the time.
My Father helped to build the airstrip on Guam during WWII in June of 1944, while there was still 5,000 Japanese on the Islands. It was hard to build and maintain, but it was critical Long Range Base then, and I believe worth keeping now.
**The project is crucial to the U.S. and its Indo-Pacific allies because it provides a logistical hub far from the U.S. mainland - Guam is closer to China than it is to Hawaii.**
The key word is allies. The rotation will require hangers big enough to hide one of those bombers. Perhaps a blowup model could be made to suggest they’re present-head fakes.
It’s funny. I wonder if MacArthur’s planes had enough gas and ammo to respond to an attack. The eternal vigilance was not present back then. The Pearl Harbor attack happened at midnite Philippine time. With proper communication they would have had a 8-10 hour heads up.
Gonna capsize for sure. (-: /sarc
Is Thailand still a US ally? Maybe they can help.
Like has been said above, it’s at a strategic location, but it’s only one island. In a war, it’s airfield will be a prime target and difficult to defend. But then the more heavily defended, the more it will draw fire away from other targets.

Like France-surrender monkeys.
There’s Cam Rhan Bay if Viet Nam could get over our involvement-they’re open. I’d give them the $4 billion Kissinger promised.
Then there’s the Taliban-Biden surrendered the airfield. They might hate the Chicoms.
Some big bases nearHo Chi Minh Cityโฆ.
They would usually be up for killing some Chinese.
I think no way VN hosts US military bases. I’d be very surprised if they allowed it. There’s Korea.
See....now that’s the real danger โ ๏ธโ ๏ธโ ๏ธ right there
Thank goodness we had a Democrat point that out
They did. Gen Brereton wanted to immediately bomb jap bases on Formosa, the threat that got them later in the day. Dugout Doug kept his planes grounded because โThe general says no. Donโt make the first overt act,โ
The whole story is here... where politics replaced sound military strategy.

Go back to LeMay racetrack routes from SAC.
” B-52’s need to be scattered around on a rotating basis to other islands-empty and remote.”
Great. They will make even more WWII Pacific battlefields difficult or impossible to visit by turning them in modern bases. You already can’t visit Iwo Jima, Roi-Namur, Midway, Wake, Johnston Atoll because of the US Government. They are building new runways on Peleliu also and are soaking up all available accommodations. Annoying.
Their idiotic war addiction is ruining the ability of normal people’s tourism. The DC beast must be appeased.
they are also reactivating the base on Tinian where the B-29s launched from to hit Japan. Pretty soon nobody will ever be able to tour those old places anymore.
Mac had a full 7 hours and wasted that time. Then he was defeated by a smaller Japanese force. Then he withdrew into the Bataan Peninsula where he was easily bottled up.
As surrender was imminent, he fled and left his men to their fate.
He got a Medal of Honor.
One of America’s worst generals. The only thing he ever did well was the occupation of Japan. He was such a pompous man, and spent so much time in the far east, that the Japanese saw him as almost royal and he knew how to rule them.
Or killed.
