When you think Halloween, it’s hard not to picture candy corn (gross, but iconic), kids in overpriced costumes, and jack-o’-lanterns grinning like they just got their student loans forgiven. But this spooky celebration, now pretty much an American pastime, wasn’t born in the aisles of Spirit Halloween stores. Nope, it started as a Celtic tradition before America slapped its commercial magic all over it and exported it worldwide like a Marvel movie.

Happy Halloween Y’all.
We don’t do halloween. We decorate for fall and Thanksgiving - no spooky stuff.
These panics aren’t just to laugh at either. Remember the McMartin preschool trial? Pazder was an “expert” witness.
Yeah. People’s lives ruined, based on “recovered” memories that didn’t make any sense given the layout. I can’t remember if it was McMartin or somebody else were the kids “remembered” being taken to the basement, but there’s not a basement within 10 miles of the place. The satanic panic is straight up evil.
The real danger was from the heavy metal albums!
The most anti-God holiday dressed up like a pro God holy day.
There’s the actually funny bit. The satanic panic was so good for heavy metal. So much free publicity. It took metal from a mostly underground small label can’t get in the malls genre of music to king of the heap. It was only a few years after the panic started that hair metal became the #1 rock and roll genre, every label had at least one LA band. And that slid into grunge, and the gnu metal. And then rock and roll lost out to hip hop. As a young metal head who’d gotten into it a couple years before the LA scene exploded I would actually seek out panickers on TV (they were on the 700 Club like every other week) and take notes. I was buying the albums the were warning my mom about, once I found the underground record store. Best thing to happen to metal.
