Politics, once a first date taboo, is now more important for daters. A relationship expert shares tips.

Online daters are used to swiping right or left — but could their decision hinge on whether that person leans right or left politically?

Political views of a potential partner are becoming more important for daters, Terri Orbuch, a relationship expert and professor of sociology at Oakland University.

"Our identities and who we see ourselves as are tied to these issues that have now become political, which are issues of social justice and diversity and inclusion and equity, gender, race, sexual orientation," Orbuch said.

So, how do you bring up politics during a date. She suggests a three-step approach:

1. Observe behaviors: "What you really want to do at this first step is observe their behaviors and how they interact talk with other people," said Orbuch. "How are they talking to the barista, the server, the person that is seating you? Are they respectful? Are they looking at them? Are they talking to them respectfully? Are they tipping?"

2. Ask life questions: Instead of direct questions about politics, ask questions that reveal what they value in life. For example, what does their ideal weekend look like? What do they like to do outside of work?

"These are great questions to get answers about a whole lot of topics, but I also think you can get answers to how they value ideas about social justice, diversity and inclusion," she said.

3. Share your own experiences: Lastly, you can reveal what you value by sharing your own interests.

To show you value family you might say, "I love my niece ... so I volunteered yesterday at her school to read a story," Orbuch said.

Seeing how the other person responds, she said, even by observing their nonverbal reactions, will tell you a lot about whether they hold similar key life values.

1. Observe behaviors: "What you really want to do at this first step is observe their behaviors and how they interact talk with other people," said Orbuch. "How are they talking to the barista, the server, the person that is seating you? Are they respectful? Are they looking at them? Are they talking to them respectfully? Are they tipping...?"

"...These are great questions to get answers about a whole lot of topics, but I also think you can get answers to how they value ideas about social justice, diversity and inclusion," she said.

This is unintentionally very enlightening, but not in the way the author suspects. It's just revelatory of her own biases. She's basically saying "if people are rude to servers and bad tippers, they are conservative. And if they are nice to servers and good tippers, they are progressive."

That's obviously bogus because how you treat other people is a personal quality independent of political views. Plenty of conservatives are very considerate of servers, and many leftists are condescending. But the fact that she believes otherwise just shows how completely twisted her own worldview truly is. Condescending, insulting, and antagonistic towards anyone who is a conservative, and not just because of their political views, but because of the assumptions she makes about the rest of their life.

Just...wow. The only thing I learned about dating from that article is to never, ever date anyone like her.

I know young people - and this is true. The new 'rebel' is conservative...

That was true in 1980 as well. Young people rebelled against negative depictions of the U.S. and defeatism in mass media, and went heavy for Reagan.

A guy I know says he dated a female Democrat. He said he was doing to her what Biden/Harris have been doing to the country.

Date? Maybe. Are they open to a civil conversation and facts? Some just need a nudge or being mugged with facts and logic. Marriage? That’s an entirely different matter.

On the first date with the girl who is now my wife I found out she was a member of the “young Democrats”. By the second date she quit those clowns and soon became a Republican.

Sounds like someone with no ‘social network’ and is using dating apps to find a date.

That's most Millenials and Gen Z.

2. Ask life questions: Do you like babies dead or alive?

That will tell you all you need to know.

I had a somewhat similar experience. My first girlfriend in college brought me by her apartment. She had a cork board with a picture of a rabbit used to test makeup on its eyeballs, so one was really bloodshot. I asked her how much she donated to PETA to get that picture. She told me “$10.” I said I would now need to donate $10 to a group that supports animal testing, to counter that, then explained how such testing was humanly better, and biblically better, than doing so on humans.

Her major was a science major that commonly experimented on mice. That, too, was intellectually vapid, and I told her this (more nicely).

She was a truly good girl, but she later got offered a job many hours away, and it became difficult to keep up the relationship. I did later go to her wedding, and have always had a soft spot for her.

Oh, and she became a Republican, too.

Don’t give up so easily if she is a good person. My wife said she voted for Bill Clinton in 1992 and was pro choice. We got married a few years after than and by 1996 she voted for Dole and was pro-life. It really didn’t take much but my patient, logical explanation of the issues. She got it! Turns out all her prior “beliefs” were implanted by others as she was too busy studying and working to bother with politics.

What a long strange trip it's been.

I wonder, how many conservatives have self identified as a rebel about whatever issue(s) is/are dear to them? The machine is progressivism. Right?

So let lefty men have lefty women and they can murder all their tissue masses.

Far right rebels can take the pretty gals, make happy kids and save the world. Sounds like a plan. All in favor?

I could never date a liberal.

Here's the hidden secret that liberals don't want you to know: Most women will adopt the political views of their husbands.

They're all feminist libtards until a Trump-voting Alpha steps into the picture and sweeps them off their feet.

Nope. We gotta marry them and go to work on it.

Yep!

And when it works, it can work pretty well.

My wife defers to me on issues of politics and so when we vote, she mirrors her ballot to mine. It's like I get to vote twice!

The machine is progressivism/communism.

And it’s failed every place it’s been tried. The only thing it’s good for is fooling people into thinking human nature can be changed by wishful delusional thinking and by electing the scum putting out those lies.

Maybe young people are catching on to the reality of what left wing fruitcake, snowflakes are all about.
