I and my soon to be wife saw the Grateful Dead in 1976 at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. We were seated on the floor maybe 100 feet back from the stage.

Saw the at the philmore east a number of times the Central Park band shelland Woodstock in 69. Also saw the at capital theater in rye NY. Some great performances….some not so great. I guess the drugs available to them at the time made the difference

He outlived most rock stars. 84 is respectable by any measure.

Ok, now for a Grateful Dead joke.

Why did deadheads wave their hands in front of their faces during a concert?

To keep the music out of their eyes.

I know plenty of dead heads in NY suburbia hugely successful and educated. The Dead shows at the Meadowlands and so forth, the traders/Wall Street stock bros were dependable show ups

So no… but ya some of them. Ok.

I only went to a few shows

Too bad they spoke up about their stupid political ideas

There’s no need for it. Shows their lack of exposure, maturity and education. We don’t want to see it. Because we do ignore them.

Saw them as a 17 year old in 1973. Been listening to them ever since

Only saw them once in 1969. Never a big fan but they were around. Especially liked jerry garcia’s unique sound. Phil was an integral part. Amazing he made it to 84. RIP.

Kinda shocked when I heard Lesh was 84. Reminds me I’m getting older too. I think my 1st Dead concert was 1972.
Great bassist. Thanks for the music.
RIP

Sad news. I have no idea how many times I saw them. It was a lot.

I did the parking lot thing (Autzen Stadium), once. I actually paid to go in when they toured with Bob Dylan.

An early sound engineer, Owsley Stanley, for The Dead became an infamous LSD SF-based chemist noted for his supremely pure drug.

Later, he became the subject of Steely Dan’s “Kid Charlamagne” - a song with the incredibly iconic guitar solo by Larry Carlton.

I’ll say I’m not a “Dead Head” and I don’t play their music much. I have however seen them in concert many times and their shows would just blow you away. Garcia was a virtuoso and the shows were great.

I met a guy in 2020 that was from Portland, moving through the area. He had the dancing bears tattoo on his forearm. He asked if I knew what it was. Then he asked how many times I’d seen The Dead. “Just once.” He said he envied the hell out of me. Usually when I heard that question answered, it was dozens, if not a couple of hundred times. Then it hit me that he had been an infant when Jerry Garcia died. I felt a little O L D.
