JD Vance and the Fight for Pennsylvania’s Catholic Voters
The New York Times ^ | Oct. 18, 2024 | Elizabeth Dias

Three dozen Catholics from “Lebo,” as the Mt. Lebanon area of Pittsburgh is called, packed into Colleen Oxenreiter’s living room on a recent Friday evening. Lebo is a heavily Catholic neighborhood, and her home was the one with a giant Trump sign in the yard, by her pumpkins.

She explained the group’s mission: to reach out, in a campaign of postcards and video text messages, to Catholic Republicans who did not vote in 2020. If they vote this time, she hoped, it could be enough to win back the battleground state, and the White House.

The group had another big motivator: JD Vance, the 40-year-old Republican vice-presidential nominee.

Ms. Oxenreiter recounted how a friend had recently raised concerns that former President Donald Trump was “too old.”

“I said, ‘Well, that’s why he picked Vance!’” she said. “Another eight years!”

With Election Day closing in, white Catholic voters could prove important to the G.O.P. in Pennsylvania, a swing state often won by razor-thin margins. White Catholics tend to be reliably Republican, but in 2020, Mr. Biden, a Catholic born in Pennsylvania, capitalized on his cultural affinity with them, at least enough to narrow the partisan gap, and won the state.

In 2024, Mr. Vance is the only Catholic candidate on either ticket, a convert, economic populist and outspoken social conservative. His political profile resonates with many of these voters, who are worried about issues like education, transgender rights and the economy, in addition to abortion. At Ms. Oxenreiter’s house party, Mr. Vance proved to be a valuable touchstone — a reassurance that no matter how much Mr. Trump may waffle on issues like abortion, Mr. Vance is one of them.

First time in my lifetime that any VP nominee was more than a placeholder. Vance is the real deal. I didn't think so at first, but I do now.

Any Catholic voters that have to be fought over to get their votes for Trump and Vance should go to Hell. Well, maybe not if they end up voting for Trump and Vance, but if they have to be fought over, there should be an IQ test for Heaven and they wouldn’t pass.

They are about as “Catholic” as the Pope.

I’ll say it again. Any POTUS wannabe in the rat party will have to go through him and perhaps DeSantis in ‘28. If Trump wins JD should OFFER a 2 year window where the wannabes can debate him on one issue. Put it out there and see who bites. Disregard openly those who ‘don’t qualify’. Give Americans a window on what to look forward to on the real issues.

I see you are back EPU, with you and your love affair with the New York Times. Bet this won’t be your first today. Or tomorrow. Or...

Why? Trump is a serial adulterer. He is not pro life.. He will not vote for life on the Florida ballot. He supports tax payer funded IVF and birth control access. He Does not attend church weekly.. Why would any Catholic be morally bound to vote for him?

There are potential economic reasons to vote for him sure, but what does that have to do with Catholicism?

If not Trump, then it’s the Marxists. Do you have any idea what communists do when they are in charge? You would risk your children being ruled by murderers or being murdered by them because Trump isn’t your perfect moral candidate? I wish I could live in the world that’s in your head.

Your screen name is about my tenth or eleventh favorite thing in the universe. But you are wrong in your attack.

Some of us actually appreciate having what the other side is saying being brought to our attention.

So just simmer down a bit.

Why would any Catholic be morally bound to vote for him?

Because he will leave you be.

Want to send your kids to Catholic school rather then public school?

Harris has a problem with that, Trump does not.

Want to protest abortion?

Harris will put you in jail. Trump will not.

Just two of the things that you should consider.

I do not need the leader of the country to be a paragon of virtue. I need him not to be actively trying to destroy me.

Seems to me there is a pretty big difference in what fed and SC judges will be nominated. Absolutely zilch chance any pro-life, pro-religious freedom, pro-family black robed lawyer comes from Harris. With Trump you get a better than average chance. The least worst anyhow.

I am sure you enjoy sniffing your own farts.

Now that we have insulted each other I will put it in plain English. When your born on day is 2017 and the person you are attacking has a born on date of 1998 you MIGHT possibly want to think carefully before starting a war.

FR was a lot smaller back then and a lot of them knew each other personally.

Don’t misunderstand, I didn’t say I wouldn’t vote for him, I said it isn’t a Catholic moral imperative, big difference.

These seem like reasons to fear the other candidate, not a reason to vote for Trump. What he offers then is: “ Well at least he’s not as bad as the other guy” which may be a good reason but it doesn’t make a Catholic hell bound if they don’t.

Probably the best reason to vote for Trump honestly. Thanks.

Nope.

Leaving you alone is a positive reason to vote for someone.

Most people can not resist the urge when given power to meddle just a bit, a trifle and for your own good of course. And maybe just a bit more....

Sounds like a great idea, with the BEST of intentions, what could possibly go wrong? Aside from everything.

That is an active positive reason to vote for him.

And I have no idea what a Roman Catholic would have to do to be hell bound for doing it any more.

I used to know but now.... you got me. The message is kind of muddled.
