Ukraine could have nuclear weapons within weeks -Bild

Kiev has the capability to build a nuclear weapon "in a few weeks," a high-ranking Ukrainian official has told Bild, the German tabloid reported on Thursday after Vladimir Zelensky announced his atomic ambitions.

Ukraine needs either membership in NATO or nuclear weapons, Zelensky said on Friday in Brussels, arguing in favor of his "victory plan" to end the conflict with Russia.

This prompted Bild to reveal that a Ukrainian official involved in weapons procurement told them "a few months ago" that Kiev was willing to go nuclear.

"We have the material, we have the knowledge. If the order is given, we will only need a few weeks to have the first bomb," the unnamed official said, according to the German tabloid, adding that the West should "think less about Russia's red lines and more about ours."

In his speech on Thursday, Zelensky claimed to have informed former - and possibly future - US President Donald Trump about Kiev's atomic aspirations.

"Speaking to Donald Trump, I told him: 'What is the way out for us?'Either Ukraine will have nuclear weapons, and they will serve as protection, or we need to be in some kind of an alliance. We don't know any effective alliances except NATO," Zelensky said. He also claimed that Trump agreed with him.

Trump has made no mention of Zelensky's nuclear proposal, however. In the time since their meeting, he also made a case in an interview that nuclear weapons were the greatest threat to humanity and that he hoped to make a global deal on eventual denuclearization during his first term in the White House.

They certainly have breeder reactors.

It’s just not that hard once you have that.

I doubt it.

That would add an all new level to the risks involved for everyone and we wouldn’t allow it.

Also, if Ukraine had this capability, they would want to announce their membership to the club by lighting one under ground in a test.

“Today’s light water reactors – used to make commercial power in the United States – create plutonium when the uranium in their fuel fissions. Some of the neutrons released by uranium interact with other uranium atoms to form plutonium. Some of the plutonium itself fissions – part of the chain reaction of splitting atoms that is the basis of nuclear power. Any plutonium that does not fission stays in the spent fuel. Spent nuclear fuel from U.S. reactors contains about 1 percent plutonium by weight.”

https://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/fact-sheets/plutonium.html

The percentage is probably higher than I initially thought because a fuel rod is probably taken out of service before all the U-235 in it is consumed.

Just cut to the chase. Everybody gets a nuke! You get a nuke! You get a nuke! Everyone gets a nuke! Now, on the count of 3, hit your button. 1... Ivan, wait until 3... 2... bye world. No more wars and no one wins. Happy now? How about a nice game of chess?

“Fat Man” was the second plutonium, implosion-type bomb. The first was the “Gadget” detonated at the Trinity site on July 16, 1945. In the implosion-type device, a core of sub-critical plutonium is surrounded by several thousand pounds of high-explosive designed in such a way that the explosive force of the HE is directed inwards thereby crushing the plutonium core into a super-critical state. Dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, it was the second nuclear weapon used in a war.

Weight: 10,800 lbs
Length: 10 ft 8 in.; Diameter: 60 in.
Fuel: Plutonium 239
Plutonium Fuel: approx. 13.6 lbs; approx. size of a softball
Plutonium core surrounded by 5,300 lbs of high explosives; plutonium core reduced to size of tennis ball
Bomb Initiator: Beryllium – Polonium
All components of Fat Man ferried to Tinian Island aboard B-29’s of the 509th Composite Group
Efficiency of weapon: 10 times that of Little Boy
Approximately 1 kilogram of plutonium fissioned
Explosive force: 21,000 tons of TNT equivalent
Use: Dropped on Japanese city of Nagasaki; August 9, 1945
Nuclear Weaponeer: Cdr. Frederick Ashworth
Delivery: B-29 Bockscar piloted by Maj. Charles Sweeney

They were going after the nuclear plant in Kursk but could not make it that far.

Reportedly, they especially wanted to capture nuclear weapons stored near the plant, too. I have never seen confirmation of nuclear weapons being stored there, so big spoonful of salt on that claim.

Zelensky is getting ever more desperate and delusional. So are the Dims. Both desperately want Trump to lose. So there we go. Trump’s response to this claim should be interesting!

Oh, BS, it takes a huge industry to make a nuclear weapon, and Ukraine doesn’t have one.

Or they could buy them for someone who has?

No, it would expand and draw us in since the idiots in Europe would respond. Not to mention the fall-out cloud and where it would go.
We have no clown in that circus.

No, I didn't say fighting back was a sign of mental illness, Ukraine is free to fight to the last man. An individual can display hysterical mental illness though, I'll agree with you on that. Zelensky's statements about nuclear weapons would seem extremely irrational. I also didn't declare the Russians to be "good guys". I did imply America has no business in this conflict.

It is not our affair, nor does it affect The United States in any way. It does seem to affect the personal and business dealings of a great many of our politicians and corrupt corporations who seem to be deeply involved in many questionable activities within this highly corrupt nation.

I assume metro DC is protected by Pu-239 radiation sensors in roads and bridges and so are the Moscow and St. Petersburg areas.

Iran’s U-235 bombs might not trigger metro DC’s sensors.

I doubt Ukraine has the ability to deliver multiple Pu-239 bombs by air.

The Russians will scorch earth any facility suspected for having nuclear weapons.

If Ukraine was dumb to try to use a nuclear bomb against Russia, it would be wiped off the face of the earth. Russia would unload part of its arsenal on Ukraine.

Ukrainians nor you are sharpest tools in the shed.

I’d be more concerned with their development of a bio weapon.

The whole they gave up “their” nukes is kind of a misnomer. Those weapons may have been there like we have ours in the mid western states but they were always under the control of Moscow.
