The Catch-22 of Puerto Rico’s Status Referendum
Time Mag ^

Posted on 10/16/2024 9:37:40 AM PDT by DIRTYSECRET

Puerto Rico cannot become a state of the Union unless Congress admits it. It cannot become independent unless Congress agrees to it. It cannot enter into a free association arrangement unless Congress provides for it.

In other words, for Puerto Rico to cease being a colony, Congress must do its part.

Ok my friends. We all know the big elephant in the room is the prospect of 2 more democrat senators. Will we wait and play defense? On this one independence is our only way out and we need to be preemptive-not our nature.

**the Puerto Rico Status Act (PRSA). The PRSA is a federal bill that would finally offer Puerto Ricans a choice among their non-colonial options—STATEHOOD, independence, and free association under international law—and provide for a transition to the one that wins.**

The people will drift towards statehood-more money in it.
Congress will take the easy way out. My answer is no.

Advocate a return to monarchy in Hawaii for a distraction/brushfire. People of color.
Turn their arguments against them.

Not only that, but they’ll get to redesign the flag.

“Advocate a return to monarchy in Hawaii for a distraction/brushfire. People of color.”

Let’s seize the high ground on this one. Restore the monarchy, grant them independence and say we’re undoing the injustices of 1893 and 1898.

I say cut them loose.

Not going to happen - they owe too much in loans.

Puerto Rico has voted several times on whether to seek statehood. So far it always falls short of 50% support, but every few years Congress offers them another try. I think the Democrats will keep pushing the idea until they get 50% plus one vote.

I think statehood for PR is a bad idea, but at least it should require a significant majority, not just 50%. What if 20 years from now the people there decide they would rather become an independent country?

But still you are going to have to replace all the flags.

And you know what they are going to say.....”If we have to redo the flag anyway, let’s design it to better reflect who we are today”, or something like that.

It should remain as an "overseas possession" just like American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

We don't want it as a state, and cannot cut loose any possession in the western hemisphere (and have another Panama on our hands when we gave the Canal Zone over).

”If we have to redo the flag anyway, let’s design it to better reflect who we are today [with rainbow stripes instead of red and white]"

You just KNOW that's where they're going.

**Statehood-Democrats will keep pushing the idea until they get 50% plus one vote.**

Look at what they telegraphed about DC statehood and packing the court. They don’t mess around. We do.

Not going to happen - they owe too much in loans.

I suspect they'll never pay it back, or if somehow they do, it will be in dem inflated dollars that are worth a fraction of what they were given. Write it off as a bad debt and be rid of them.

How is that a catch-22?

It’s simply a requirement.

The debtors don’t call the shots, the lenders do. Not all that lost infrastructure money came from Uncle Sugar.

If you give P.R. independence, five minutes later you will have a hostile Cuba type of dictatorship there
