Some 18 North Korean soldiers are believed to have deserted the Russian frontline, with Kremlin fighters reportedly searching for them.
The troops were deployed in Russia's Kursk and Bryansk oblasts, about four miles from the border with Ukraine, when they deserted, the public broadcasting company of Ukraine, Suspilne, reported.
Intelligence officials cited by the broadcaster said the Russian military is searching for the North Korean soldiers, while commanders are trying to conceal the desertion from their higher-ups.
It comes after reports that Moscow was planning to assemble a battalion of troops sent over by Kim Jong Un to help push Ukraine's forces out of Kursk.
Ukrainian outlet LIGA reported on Tuesday that the soldiers would be involved in combat missions in the country's Southwestern regions, where Russia is still battling Ukraine's incursion.
North Korean soldiers were set to form a "special Buryat battalion," named after the Mongolic ethnic group indigenous to the region spanning Siberia as well as northern Mongolia and China, sources quoted by LIGA said.

Hey mucus, I guess you never heard about the “Frozen Chosin” who fought in the BITTER COLD (-36 F) in NORTH KOREA.
Then again, why would you? They were AMERICANS, not Ukrainians.
That is false
As of October 2024 Russia occupies 42,000 sq miles of Ukrainian territory
That is 18% of Ukraine - and considering that that includes Crimea and the Donetsk People's republic + Luhansk People's republic which Russia already occupied before Feb 2022 (the 3 of which added up to around 12% of Ukraine), this isn't that much
The PEAK that Russia occupied of Ukraine was way back in March 2022 when that was 27% of Ukraine (63,000 sq miles)
Since that peak, Russia has lost 54% of the territory it grabbed in the first two months of the war
The other point is that Russia has no more troops, so has to import them
I don’t particularly like the look of Manx cats - normally the tails in cats give them character - you can figure out what a cat is thinking by its tail waggin
I’ve never seen that one before! 😂😂😂
Poor, poor doggie.
It seems that Russia is using US/NATO tactics and strategy on the US and NATO in Ukraine, the US shouldn't have given them the idea.
Russia has started using proxies in selected areas, and has been targeting western proxies for a while, now.
Look for more proxies on the battlefield and the negative effects of that.
What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.
As evidence shows over the past 2.5 years, Russia pretty much can't
There was talk of 300K troops in December 2022 - didn't happen.
Then a surge in 2023 - didn't happen
and then in 2024 - again, didn't happen
Now Russia is importing Nork troops
The conclusion is that Russia does not have the manpower to send in more troops
The PEAK that Russia occupied of Ukraine was way back in March 2022 when that was 27% of Ukraine (63,000 sq miles)
Since that peak, Russia has lost 54% of the territory it grabbed in the first two months of the war
