Extra virgin olive oil may delay cognitive decline in Down syndrome
Medical Xpress / Alzheimer's Center at Temple University / Journal of Alzheimer's Disease ^ | Oct. 8, 2024 | Jian-Guo Li et al

Researchers recently investigated the effect of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) on brain health and memory to determine if consumption of extra virgin olive oil, the main component of the Mediterranean diet, can delay cognitive decline in people with Down syndrome (DS).

DS is the most common genetically induced form of physical and intellectual disability, and while modern medical advances have helped to prolong life expectancy from around 40 years to an average of 60, the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in DS patients has become more common than ever before.

Individuals with DS develop age-dependent cognitive decline and synaptic dysfunction. Studies have shown that by the age of 40, about 50% of people with DS manifest significant learning and memory problems which are associated with the presence of Alzheimer's-like impairment.

Using a mouse model of DS, researchers administered EVOO for five months in their diet, after which they were tested for learning and memory impairment. Synaptic function was then measured, and brain tissues were assessed for inflammatory biomarkers.

Researchers found that mice receiving EVOO had a significant improvement in learning and spatial memory. Additionally, treated mice had an improvement in synaptic function, and EVOO decreased levels of several inflammatory biomarkers.

"Administration of EVOO to a mouse model of Down syndrome has beneficial effects on memory impairments, synaptic function deficits and neuroinflammation," says Domenico Praticò, MD.

"Our findings provide additional support for the potential therapeutic effects of EVOO in individuals with Down syndrome."

OK if someone has taken its top off and gently ran his finger around the lip of the bottle. Not OK if the bottle is pregnant.

Too bad it’s rather expensive to buy.
Wonder if it offers similar benefits to those who do not have Down’s Syndrome?

I thought it meant olives that never even looked at a man or listened to Taylor Swift.

The study used 50 mg/Kg.

That’s roughly 9 grams a day for a 150 pound person.

A Tablespoon of olive oil has 14 grams.

I didn’t know about the early cognitive decline. Jeez, like these people don’t have enough to deal with.

I had a distant cousin with this. He was on the lower end of functionality and didn’t make it past his mid forties (heart issues).

I buy Pompeian Smooth Extra Virgin Olive Oil, First Cold Pressed, on AMZ. It’s not expensive there. I use it every day on steamed potatoes, in salad dressing, and to coat the inside of my egg poacher cups. It doesn’t have to be organic. I pay about $15 for a three-month supply.. I recently saw it in a supermarket for over $40.

You can always check out foods and vitamins at WebMD. My own MD told me about that site
