The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).

The middle name of the author gives it away.
Single letters, one of them starting the three letter word after the comma, and I had the middle name before I knew it was there.
Watch out for that stem!
