CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - A severe geomagnetic storm could make the northern lights visible in many parts of the United States this week, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center issued a G4 geomagnetic storm watch for Thursday, Oct. 10, and Friday, Oct. 11.
G4 watches are one step below the most extreme watch. During G4 watches, NOAA said voltage control problems are possible within the power grid, and radio and satellite function can be degraded, sporadic or disrupted.
According to the watch, the storm will likely “lead to highly elevated geomagnetic activity.” Because of the geomagnetic activity, officials said aurora, or the northern lights, could be visible over much of the northern half of the United States, and potentially as far south as Alabama.
The northern lights were highly visible in some parts of the Carolinas in May, when a G5 storm – the most extreme level – struck. Then, blues, greens and purples danced across the night sky.
Earlier this week, a WBTV viewer sent in a stunning photo of what appeared to be aurora in Banner Elk NC.
They were spectacular last night. Hope for a repeat tonight.
This is fake news.
Obviously this is due to climate change.
Just like the hurricanes, the April total eclipse, the Phillies’ collapse to the Mets, and Harris’ inability to string together a coherent sentence.
Definitely climate change.
I’m puttig a magnet in my front yard with the north pole pointed north.
Like charges repel each other and this will keep the Aurora away. Probably won’t even reach Tennessee because of my defense.
We saw them here (near Philly) last night around 7:30 .... were mostly red but on the phone camera you could see orange, purple and a little green too — really cool!
Nope. Somebody left the HAARP on too long!
Magnetic Change! Caused by capitalism of course!
There were beautiful images of the northern lights from…Tennessee.
We’re at the grand solar maximum.
... )
I looked last night in (mid center south) Alabama, and nothing. Saw Jupiter rising in the East North East, and it was spectacular! I could see the specks of the moons (Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto) through my 20X binoculars.
I’ll look again tonight.
Some here in Golden valley az ( Kingman area ) showed pictures of them
