NC National Guard responds to viral Black Hawk video blowing away relief supplies: 'Very sorry'

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- A day after the North Carolina National Guard said it was investigating after a video went viral on social media that showed a Black Hawk helicopter's rotor wash blowing away relief supplies in western North Carolina, an official elaborated at a briefing led by Gov. Roy Cooper.

Maj. Gen. Todd Hunt, the adjutant general of the North Carolina National Guard, (NCNG) responded after a reporter's question on Tuesday afternoon.

"That was a North Carolina National Guard helicopter, it's under our command and I'll take responsibility for it, and we own it," Hunt said. "What this situation was was they were bringing in a generator to that landing site. As they approached they noticed that there were too many people and too many tents and commodities too close to the landing site, so they pulled in power to take back off ... and the rotor wash caused that damage."

The video, taken Tuesday in the Burnsville area, set off a firestorm of anger and conspiracy theories and was viewed millions of times on social media.

In the video, tents, papers and other supply items were blown away at a site set up by civilians helping with the relief effort.

The NCNG UH-60 Black Hawk was delivering a generator to the site but failed to land. The pilot powered back up and left, but not before creating a mess.

"We are very sorry that happened, and again, investigation is underway," Hunt said.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The NCNG added that the incident remains under investigation and the Black Hawk's crew has been grounded until the investigation is completed.

Whatever.

Someone in a position of authority actually took it upon themselves to claim responsibility.

Fire them? They should be given a frickin award for this!

If more people this that, we wouldn’t have so many disillusioned folks that have become bitter and hateful about everything and everyone.

They needed a generator to charge the tiny chainsaws.

As if the pilot couldn’t see the people, vehicles and all the brightly colored packages of supplies by the pallet load before getting that low? BS

I followed NC NG X account for a week and they were in places like Asheville, always on intact roads or parking lots. This must have been their first trip anywhere near hill country where the roads and houses were washed away and people were buried alive in mud.

I saw the video. Nothing slung underneath. Flying was kind of erratic. DEI pilot - probably saw how well the self sufficient white folk were doing, including already having a big generator on site, and it pissed her/him/they/it off.

I wondered if this was an attempt to draw fire so the “vicious redneck” trope could be used

Had the same thought. What a great way to get rid of all those pesky volunteers.

an event that nearly killed people.

Give it a rest, it was stupid and no one nearly got killed Kamala.

: Why would anyone try to play it off as something insignificant?

You need to get out of the house more. Same thing happens dozens of not hundred times daily. Everywhere helos operate.

Did not look intentional at all. If it had been intentional it would have been much worse. That looked more like what happens on a breezy day at any art fair in the country. Those little 10 x 10 tents will lift off in a heartbeat even in a light wind if not firmly weighted down.
People need to get a grip.

Second rotorwash event and I think this one is what the NC NG is apologizing for, not the blackhawk. This one’s a Chinook.

If the general takes full responsibility he should be relieved of command and face a court Marshaled.

Otherwise his words mean nothing.

If someone takes full responsiblity, there should be real consequences, His career should be over.

Yes, I wonder how many of the keyboard warriors here have actually been around helicopters and airplanes?

The pilot was probably thinking more about flying the thing and not crashing than what was going to happen from the rotor wash.

He may have had no alternative.

I saw the video, Too many know it all Karens out there.

I have seen real messes made on flight lines by helicopters and planes, only one intentional and the Army guys were warned of what was about to happen.

Someone on the ground is more to blame for not controlling the landing zone.

Heartless enabler. It is your very attitude that gets people hurt failing to take serious near misses as serious.

There is no way a military trained crew in a military helicopter fails so miserably to clear a landing site, it is not a whoops, it is malicious or gross incompetence but you apparently just want to say, no biggie move on.. disgusting.

Yes some could have easily been harmed and or killed. Seriously, you also fail to understand the danger that was present, yes no one got hurt but that hardly means it was not VERY dangerous.

I do not fly helicopters but I do fix, maintain and train others to maintain Nuclear Power Plants. I know an egregious near miss when I see one.

You do not just ignore it and say “my bad.” They must be taken very seriously, what amazes me are the keyboard warriors white knighting for an event that was very dangerous and showed serious failures in executing what looked like a helicopter landing.

Serious question:

Were they trying to land and didn’t realize how bad they were going to blow everything around, until too late?

Or was it a deliberate action? (like if there was really no place to land, and they just were being a$$holes)
