A lost Trump interview comes back to life
The Washington Post ^ | 10/10/2024 | Bob Woodward

Posted on 10/10/2024 3:41:34 PM PDT by E. Pluribus Unum

One evening in February 1989, my Watergate reporting partner Carl Bernstein bumped into Donald Trump at a dinner party in New York.

“Why don’t you come on up?” Carl urged me on the phone from the party, hosted by Ahmet Ertegun, the Turkish American socialite and record executive, in his Upper East Side townhouse. “Everybody’s having a good time,” he said. “Trump is here. It’s really interesting. I’ve been talking to him.”

Carl was fascinated with Trump’s book, “The Art of the Deal.” Somewhat reluctantly, I agreed to join him, in large part, as Carl often reminds me, because I needed the key to his apartment, where I was staying at the time.

“I’ll be there soon,” I told him.

It had been 17 years since Carl and I first collaborated on stories about the Watergate burglary on June 17, 1972.

Trump took a look at us standing together, and he came over. “Wouldn’t it be amazing if Woodward and Bernstein interviewed Donald Trump?” he said.

Carl and I looked at each other.

“Sure,” Carl said. “How about tomorrow?”

“Yeah,” Trump said. “Come to my office at Trump Tower.”

“This guy is interesting,” Carl assured me after Trump was gone.

“But not in politics,” I said.

I was intrigued by Trump, a hustler entrepreneur, and his unique, carefully nurtured persona, designed even then to manipulate others with precision and a touch of ruthlessness.

It’s a portrait of Trump at age 42, focused on his real estate deals, making money and his celebrity status. But he was hazy about his future.

“ And hints on what the interview was like?”

It’s from Bob Woodward in the Washington Post

That’s enough of a hint to not get even as far as the paywall

Bob Woodward served as a Naval Intelligence Officer from 1965 to 1970. After less than a year as a Cub Reporter for the Washington Post, he was “assigned” the Watergate story. Coincidence? Six of the seven Watergate burglars were connected to the CIA. The seventh, G. Gordon Liddy, was FBI. Supposedly, Liddy hatched the plan for the break in. John Dean sat in on the original proposal by Liddy. Dean later volunteered to run the coverup. When it was clear he was caught, rather than go down for his crimes, Dean brokered a deal for immunity.

That sentence is certainly something that could written by a novelist. But it’s totally out of place for someone who claims to be a reporter.

Stick to the five W’s, Mr. Woodward.

Trump is singularly unique within the political establishment. He wasn’t a politician when he entered the political world. That means that he’s had a very unpolitical past that most in government never had. Moreover, it also means that he’s said and done all sorts of things that his political associates have not. Career politicians spend a lifetime avoiding anything that might come back to haunt them. Trump doesn’t have that luxury.

Liddy talked about John Dean all the time on his show.

Dean was a scumbag.
