Often celebrated as a chameleon for its adaptability depending on terroir and winemaking style, Chardonnay produces some of the most beautiful and coveted wines in the world. However, with this elevated status comes lofty price tags that can be off-putting for many consumers.

Seeking affordable yet overachieving Chardonnay, we reached out to sommeliers. With suggestions for bottles from Burgundy, examples from the Jura, and one “absolutely addictive” Chardonnay that hails from the underappreciated Auvergne region, the experts were in a very French state of mind. And for those seeking bottles beyond France, budget-friendly wines from California, Oregon, Germany and Italy also made appearances in these sommeliers’ recommendations. There’s even a canned Chardonnay that’s an ideal sidekick for a picnic.

Amen
I’m drinking a complex frog red if possible
Barnyard that opens up

That’s real wine

I will admit my rib drinks fruity whites like PG daily

I bought her a chateau potelle VGS ten years ago and it was indeed buttery and pear hints
A complex white but for what that then 40 dollar wine cost today 125-300 you can get a damn good red French or a west coast varietal if u must

Or other nations too

I remember when chastened de papes were cheap

Italian mascarelli was 5.99 a bottle and now 25-30

Best wine value I ever knew btw that one

I’m the 80s I bought wine at Madison liquors in Manhattan Margaux for 38 a bottle
It’s all my Barnard assistant professor paramour wanted lol

Now wifey craves that Sancerre rosè swill

Sheep

Will have to check it out. In CA, we’d pick up Two Buck Chuck once in a while and it was fine now and then. (I’m sure it’s more than $2 now.)

Wine value?

A mass market wine that always scored well in the blind taste test competitions (at least in the early aughts) was Fetzer.

Good stuff, you could find it in the supermarkets and wasn’t an overpriced crap shoot as are so many wines.

Most important, if you like a wine, drink that one.

Take a large glass, add Carlo Rossi burgundy, then a small amount of Moscato, then add a handful of frozen fruit (cheap sacked fruit from Walmart) and you have a tasty summer tisane (I think that was Hercule Poirot’s take). P.S. Don’t tell me inflation hasn’t struck hard. Carlo’s jug Burgundy which once went for $12 is now $17+.

Wine value isn’t complicated

Mascarelli at 5.99 10 years ago is the best quality wine I’ve ever found for the money

Not sure why that required another explanation honestly
