DeSantis Orders Florida National and State Guard to Keep Ports Open as State Recovers From Hurricane Helene

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Thursday that he has ordered the Florida National Guard and Florida State Guard deploy to ports affected by the Longshoremen strike to maintain order and potentially resume operations.

During a press conference in Manatee County, DeSantis discussed three executive actions he’s taken amid the ongoing hurricane recovery efforts in Florida. The first action he announced was the lifting of time restrictions on rentals, so residents who need a place to stay while they repair their homes are not limited. The governor said he also authorized supervisors of elections in the hardest-hit counties to make appropriate accommodations so people are still able to vote in the November election.

And DeSantis said it was “unacceptable” to let the dockworkers’ strike undermine residents who need supplies to rebuild homes and businesses.

“At my direction the Florida National Guard and the Florida State Guard will be deployed to critical ports affected to maintain order, and if possible, resume operations that would otherwise be shut down during this interruption,” the governor said.

With 16 deepwater ports, Florida is a hub for worldwide trade and an essential link in our nation’s supply chain. Four of these ports—Port Everglades, PortMiami, Port Tampa Bay, and JAXPORT—are impacted by the International Longshoreman’s Association strike and the inaction of the Biden-Harris Administration.

Disrupting the distribution of food, equipment, and supplies as the Southeast U.S. recovers from Hurricane Helene is unacceptable. Floridians need a reliable, steady supply of resources and building materials to keep their families fed and rebuild their homes and businesses.

Desantis said he had ordered the Florida Department of Transportation to “waive the collection of tolls and fees as well as size and weight restrictions for commercial vehicles to help expedite the transportation of goods from our ports while offsetting operational costs.”

He also said the Florida Highway Patrol would “manage the flow of traffic from all Florida seaports as needed to further expedite the flow of goods held up by the strike.”

“Unlike the federal government, Florida is taking decisive action to ensure that our economy continues to function and that victims of Hurricane Helene will have access to what they need to rebuild,” said DeSantis.

The union picked a very bad time to go on strike.

Did DeSantis know that the strike would be settled, well until January 15th and announced his move knowing that Florida could not move quick enough to pull off the move? Hate to be cynical, but you have to be with some politicians.

It’s as likely his announcement caused the Union to delay.

I don’t remember a better governor than DeSantis in my lifetime.

Or maybe the unions backed-off after realizing they were going head-to-head with Florida ports and DeSantis.

Ever think of that?

a diabolical time in fact. with so many states with many counties in need after a disaster these “union thugs” should be ashamed...but they are not. “tyranny does not always come from government but also from those who choose to profit from the misery of their fellow man without remorse for doing it” L.Star

Another option. DeSantis is interesting, just don’t have a complete read on him.

They could care less....$4/hr equates to a raise of over $8,000 each year for the next 6 years.

I think the only reason they postponed it is b/c of democrats - union must have gotten the call to make it Trump’s problem. Looks like the strike is on for Inauguration week.

No sympathy for them. NONE.

Here in NC, the shelves at our Costco were getting stripped as people were not only buying for personal use but to send to the devastated hurricane victims in our state.

F the democrats. F that union.

In a just world, Harold daggett would be a rotting corpse in the trunk of a car. The man needs a comeuppance desperately.

Was it just the coincidence that a day after the governor put this out that the strike was temporarily called off?

Had to be coincidence because it couldn’t possibly be political, right?

“DeSantis is interesting, just don't have a complete read on him.”

I mused the unions might have backed down rather than tangle with DeSantis.

I think what happened the unions have postponed the fight as a political contribution to democrats. Kamala doesn't need another economic hiccup during the campaign.

DeSantis is very interesting and creative. Use Natural disaster and the military to address the port closures. That’s thinking outside the box and perfectly defensible and would score as a political popular policy to ‘help’ people.

“DeSantis is very interesting and creative.”

Yep; he is an amazing governor.

He is a smart and an effective executive. He gets things done.

If you have never seen him give a press conference just prior to the landing of a major hurricane look it up. He comes across as being in command and able to communicate.

Not one life was lost when Hurricane Helene made landfall on the Florida coast. He told people to get out of the way of the storm; it saved lives. A lot of homes were clobbered but the owners will live to rebuild.

RD would be the absolute best person to head up DHS, or at least FEMA under DHS.

My governor has looked out for the interests of the people of FL since day one.
