End of functional life concerns, thoughts. (Old age, disease, disability, etc)
Me, myself and I | 10/02/2024

Posted on 10/02/2024 6:49:49 PM PDT by Az Joe

After seeing Carter being wheeled outside yesterday on his 100th birthday I, being 70, couldn't help feeling some sympathy for him and some fear of being in the same situation somedays. He looked oblivious to his surroundings and maybe pretty miserable.

I watched my sister deteriorate and die last May from complication's associated with Parkinson's disease over several years, especially in her last few months. She was very miserable and helpless to do almost anything for herself.

If she had wanted to kill herself and end her early misery, she would have been helpless to do it on her own. In the end, she went into hospice care and lasted almost exactly 2 weeks before she died. The hospice worker said when she was being admitted that she probably had about 2 weeks, (I guess they have seen it many times).

My faith requires that I would be expected to endure my medical condition, whatever it was, until my natural end. Of course, this may impact my loved ones greatly, who would be caring for me at least in some ways until the end.

I don't like the idea of all the suffering that might entail for me but also the burden I would be on especially my only child, and other loved ones who are currently dying off themselves slowly.

Any thoughts Freepers?

Mickey Mantle said those exact words about himself.

Love Scott Hahn! I will ask my friend if it’s ok for me to send. I don’t want to over step, but I think it may be very helpful. Thank you so much!

“What would they have warned you (or me) about?”

Waking up in the morning with every bone, joint, and muscle already aching. That is just for starters:

Taking ten or more minutes to get dressed because you have to be very careful not to move or turn or make any sudden movement or movement which your body has not made in several days or you’ll certainly damage something somewhere.

Not being able to get into or out of a vehicle without having to contort the body into positions which were never intended for the human body.

Trying to get into or out of a vehicle without hitting the back of your head on the roof of the vehicle.

Not being able to sleep well.

Not being able to eat full meals anymore in addition to starting to dislike certain foods which you have loved for your entire life.

That is only the tip of the iceberg. I could give to you other inconveniences as I think of them if you would like but I would probably forget to tell you by tomorrow.

Have you heard enough?

“for the unsaved- the saved however only have to endure a little time of suffering and then eternity with God”

If you want to delude yourself into believing fantasy then go for it! ;-)

“Maybe Death, Judgment, Heaven and Hell?”

I have family members who have passed on so that I am familiar with death and do see my own demise in the near future. Judgment? I do not know what you mean by that. ‘Heaven’ and ‘Hell’ are not in my vocabulary except to swear. ;-)

Before you condemn me, no, I am not an “atheist”! I call myself, ‘agnostic,’ because I do believe actual, scientific fact. Others may call that, “Darwinism,” but I do not agree with that view, either. Usually the first things which happen when I express my views about this topic is that I get called unbelievably atrocious names, coming from so-called, religious, supposedly, God-fearing, loving, fanatical people. I see contradictions in their responses, wouldn’t you? ;-)

The other things they do is to quote to me large passages from the bible which I do not bother to read. I always ask, ‘Which bible?’ There are so many bibles and I always wonder which one is correct! Do you not wonder which bible is correct? ;-)

There is no answer to such problems except to endure them as best as one can.

I have an issue with the tenant tenet of faith that demands a natural end.

I, too, have an issue with the Sixth Commandment ("Thou shalt not kill.").

Surly produce dept. workers, snarky bank clerks, lazy postal employees... Lots of folks just need killin'.

Everyone dies. For some there is hell on Earth. Jimmy Carter destroyed the nuclear, oil, and coal industries that were providing the USA prosperity. Now we have resource wars and communist control.

“One of my best friends (from grade school!) has a situation with her mom. She is 96, and afraid of dying. A very good woman from everything I’ve ever known about her. Seriously, one of the sweetest women I’ve ever met. How can she be so scared?”

Two things, we have a hard instinct to survive as humans, and we are brainwashed from birth to fear death.

“End of life care by the relative(s) is very debilitating. I always remind those family members who are providing the care that it’s affecting them almost as much as the dying loved one.”

Huge understatement there. I lost 20 pounds I could not afford to lose caring for my Father that six months. It was hard to remember to take care of myself, finding time to properly feed and hydrate was hit and miss all the time. And your brain is in self sacrifice mode which doesn’t help your appetite any.

“I absolutely believe that they up the dose gradually to bring about death.”

There comes a point where they are torturing themselves with their fear of death. They moan, groan, yell out constantly torturing themselves. And most times they are in great pain. They will not eat or drink no matter what you do to try and get them to. They are starving themselves to death with the fear. So they give them enough to at least relax them. When it gets to this point there is nothing else that can be done to make them comfortable and pain free until they die of malnutrition. The drugs are just helpful because they are slowly killing themselves by not eating and drinking anyhow. Once they have decided to not eat or drink it is over, they are already half way there, it cannot be stopped at that point, most times their mind is already gone, All you can do is make them more comfortable as they slowly pass over the next few days.

My older sister was an alcoholic and while she grew up in a Christian home, didn’t fully know Jesus. All she thought was that she was going to hell for all of the bad things she did.

After numerous DWI’s (thank God she never hit anyone) she spent a year in a women’s prison. Two women from the nearby small town shared the gospel with her and she was saved.

What had been phone calls full of fear of death and crying and shrieking became calls of wanting more knowledge of Christ and repentance.

On her death bed she said something like “It hurts so bad - but God has me in the palm of His hand and I’ll see him soon.”

It was so amazing to see the transformation in her. While she couldn’t fully kick the booze, her fear of death and a life full of regret was replaced with assurance and promise.

Do you really believe they administer opiates to kill?

I've witnessed it first hand. I had an infectious disease doctor tell me to my face to keep enough opiates on hand to push on my wife to end her suffering. No one will question it, he said, not even hospice.

“The hospice worker said when she was being admitted that she probably had about 2 weeks,”

They know. The Hospice lady with my mother called in the family who was outdoors doing chores. She said Mom had about a half hour, and now would be the time to come in and say goodbyes. They did. It was almost exactly a half hour.

So very sorry for your loss. My sister, husband, and I have been trying to help the husband of our friend who suddenly died in her sleep on 9/11.

She had played pickleball the day before. She had hiked with her group three days earlier. They had been married 60 years. He’s having a rough time and thankfully has two sons relatively nearby who are able to help. I hope you have a good support system to help get you through this.
