* VANITY* - How Can I Make The Font Darker or bolder ? * VANITY*
self ^ | September 28, 2024 | knarf

Posted on 09/28/2024 6:11:07 AM PDT by knarf

My eyes are getting worse and I increase the font for easier reading, but it seems to me, I might also benefit from a bolder or blacker font.

Can that be done ?

In Windows browsers, I’ve found that Control-+ and Control-minus moves the font size up and down. I use this all the time. :^)

You can change the font in your browser setting. Note that the change will be universal -- applied to all websites.

You used to be able to create what you want in MS Word, output HTML and paste that into your post. I don’t do that because of all the extra crap MS Word uses like CGI. I like pure HTML 4 because it works with every browser. You only need to know a few tags < P >, < I >, < B >, < U >, < PRE >. Now if you want to include links to webpages < A HREF=”” > or if you want to link pictures < IMG SRC=”” >. Remember to close with < /P > or whatever tag you used.

Thanks for that tip.

I’ve been using the Windows button with the + or - for videos but it is blurry and a pain running around trying to find the operation window thingy.

If you are using Windows, you can get around wearing blue light blocking eyeglasses by going to Settings, Display, Night Light. I keep Night Light on always.

I only turn off Night Light when I am shopping for attire online and I need a keen color match. ;o)

Somewhere along this route I found a font size slider button and increased my font to 110%. Working good for now. Gotta balance between screen resolution, actual screen size and how bad my eyes are.

It can be done. Apologies if this approach was already here but I only say how to make text bigger.

Some of the ideas here will sort of work, but the web sites often override what you have set.

On FreeRepublic the way John R seems to have set it up, the browser largely behaves itself so you can set it in many browsers.

The problem is that the more modern browsers have started letting you pick font and font size, but not BOLD.

So you have to choose a naturally BOLD font.

For example, I use Brave a lot. If I go through the menu to the point where I can pick fonts, then the address in the web site bar (URL bar) at the top, instead of this:

https://freerepublic.com

reads this, and I have included edge browsers too
Firefox is a little different, just go to preferences —> general, and to the bottom to the font area. (You can override the web site’s font also in Firefox, but you probably will not like it on most sites, so do not check that box unless you want to try it elsewhere.)

brave://settings/fonts <—BRAVE BROWSER
edge://settings/fonts <— EDGE BROWSER

At this point, PICK A NATURALLY BOLD FONT. This may not be obvious.

The one I would try is
change Ariel to Ariel Round MT

If you have a FreeRepublic tab open, as soon as you change that in Brave or Edge or even Chrome, the FR tab will change and basic text will be bold! This makes it easier to test different fonts. Ariel Round MT is pretty bold.

Specially crafted text in some FR articles might not change.

Try that and see if most text in FreeRepublic is not just Big, but also BOLD. BIG and BOLD, sounds appropriate here!

W
