The Trump Guide to Civil Discourse
The New York Times ^ | Sept. 20, 2024, 5:03 a.m. ET | Jamelle Bouie

The classic example of chutzpah is that of the child who murders his parents and then pleads for mercy as an orphan. With the 2024 presidential election, we have a new way to illustrate the point: the candidate who condones violence, dehumanizes his opponents and whips his supporters into a frenzy, then turns around to condemn the harsh rhetoric of his opponents and call for peaceful discourse.

Following the second attempt on his life in as many months, Trump blamed Democrats for casting him as an existential threat to American democracy.

“Look,” his running mate JD Vance said on Monday, “we can disagree with one another, we can debate one another, but we cannot tell the American people that one candidate is a fascist and, if he’s elected, it is going to be the end of American democracy.” (It should be noted that Vance has said, repeatedly, that he would have helped the former president in his attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election.)

Trump himself was more direct. “Their rhetoric is causing me to be shot at, when I am the one who is going to save the country,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News.

The obvious problem here is that Trump is infamous, going back to his first campaign for president, for condoning, encouraging and even inciting violence among his supporters.

When told, in 2015, that two Boston brothers invoked him in an assault on a homeless Hispanic man, Trump said that the people who followed him were “passionate.”

Well, Trump IS a big-mouth, loose cannon type. He should be able to “take it”.

However, leftists have been name-calling for years, not Trump, but all “Republicans” as their favorite, NAZI and Hitler, and throwing fits over everything with wanton violence.

How soon they forget, if they want to focus on “political” violence vs “we hate anything about the USA and capitalism”, the congressional baseball practice. That was BEFORE Trump.

If Trump’s rhetoric is so harsh and violent, why aren’t Democrats getting shot at Jamele? What the left objects to is that Trump’s criticism is colorful, truthful and politically effective.

That sounds libelous to me!

It is behind a paywall, so I can't read the entire piece (or should I say, steaming pile?), but if this is the best he can come up with, it is pretty pathetic. This clown is trying to equate that with "Trump is an existential threat to democracy/America/freedom" and "Trump is literally Hitler, and must be stopped"?

The Trump campaign has compiled a list—with links— of the Dem/Left's appalling, violence-inspiring rhetoric against Trump:

Democrats’ Rhetoric Inspired Another Attempt On President Trump’s Life

“President Trump said it best: 'Because of this Communist Left Rhetoric, the bullets are flying, and it will only get worse!' ”
