Thanks he will try that later. He is still hoping to recover his playlists but it sounds like he better just try and save his music on his laptop.

(BBSST: BTW: you get free phone support with your iPhone purchase):

https://getsupport.apple.com/solutions

And for “MomWithHope”: Apple Support will help you even if his phone is old/out of warranty....pick “iPhone’ and “Apple Music/iTunes” at the above link then “See your support options”/”Continue” for Apple Support Phone or Chat at the bottom of the page.

Ah...Apple. Never had an Apple product, never will.

I use my Samsung phone for most of my music listening, editing, etc. these days. My collection will play for 12 days straight...about 80 gig. I just recently found a 128 gig USB C to A thumbdrive, loaded all my stuff on it and modified a protective case for the phone to mount the very thin drive to the back of the case...a couple of tiny USB C angle adapters later...the whole thing is slim and fits neatly fits in my pocket.

Ain't technology wunnerful?

I have plenty of “3rd party store” and “ripped from CD/vinyl” music files in my iPhone music library. You have a computer? Is it a Mac or Windows or Linux? Where is your music library/files on that PC?

Win10 fully updated. That was required before iTunes or Apple Devices would even recognize my new iPhone 15 Pro Max. Then that didn't even work. My new iPhone had to be updated, then it crashed and I had to factory reset the blasted thing and redo the update, then voila! my pc saw the phone. I was then sent from Apple to the Win store to download iTunes and Apple Devices. That version of iTunes wouldn't even perform the backup function and required the Apple Devices app for that function. iTunes was a shell of a music player at that point and music only. I found a download for a standalone version of iTunes and installed that to transfer my music, then realized it was only uploading to the cloud, then if I wanted my music to be 'permanently' on my phone I had to upload the same music to the phone. Your only other option was streaming every song. If you check Apple support, they tell you that you have to have the Apple Music subscription or you will lose that transfer ability. I don't know yet if you lose access to 'downloaded' files on your phone if your subscription lapses. I also downloaded a 3rd party player app from Apple Store and transferred everything from Apple Music app on my phone to the 3rd party player. It took 3 weeks for this simple file transfer to work. I was on the phone with Apple Support and back & forth with Microsoft Support as well as Verizon (who didn't know crap from shinola) while they blamed each other.

If his “laptop” is a MacBook his music/playlists should sync back to his iPhone automatically...the same if he has a Windows laptop and has the “iTunes for Windows” program installed (”re-sync playlists”). Does he make iPhone back-ups to the iCloud or his PC? He could always restore from a prior back-up before the update...(although I have never heard of an iPhone update messing with music playlists for purchased/owned music files). Sounds like it may be an Apple Music subscription issue? Good luck, might be best to call Apple support with details.

If you have an Apple Music subscription then there is no need to load the music files for songs that are in your personal library to the iPhone...the Apple Music library is vast and Apple Music will stream/download Apple Music copies of the music files you own it finds on your Windows PC to your iPhone from Apple’s servers. If you have no Apple Music subscription it just syncs your personal music files over to the iPhone. For music you have that isn’t available in their Apple Music library it should allow you to copy that over with iTunes for Windows.

From Apple Support online...

"Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! That's a great question you have about what will happen if you cancel your Apple Music subscription. Once your Apple Music subscription is canceled you will lose access to the playlists you created and any music you've downloaded. Also, your music and playlists would not return if you decide to sign up for Apple Music again in the future. However, you will have access to it until the day your subscription officially ends and your purchased music would not be affected. "

My question answered.

I have had an iPhone for several years and generations now and occasionally run into an issue where a handful of songs I’ve purchased, have stopped playing. Had to get Apple on the phone for assistance. If he subscribes to the monthly service, I would still reach out. My point is there are at least two types of subscriptions for iPhone music. I’m sure there are other 3rd party music applications. Best of luck.

Your “non-Apple Music” playlists/music files shouldn’t be affected tho. (After Apple Music sub. ends) Am not an Apple Music subscriber since I had it briefly for 3 months as a promo with a new Apple device, but it didn’t affect my old existing playlists/ripped music files in my “ iTunes” (iTunes has been gone for Mac users for awhile...now the Mac music App is just called “Music” (not to be confused with the “Apple Music subscription”)...the program is still called “iTunes” on Windows I guess.

iTunes will not remain an option. Apple is replacing that with the Apple Music app along with Apple Devices. It is nothing like iTunes by my research. I’m open to being wrong. The newest release of iTunes doesn’t even display your connected device folders, music movies podcast and such. It’s not there. With the older version of iTunes, that is all displayed but you cannot do a simple copy/paste from the PC side of that to the phone side music folder. I bookmarked your link and will tackle my sons iPhone and attempt what they describe.

On my PC, everything is intact. That is segregated from anything Apple or iTunes related. My biggest issue is having this on my iPhone and the only access to it will be if I maintain a subscription for a service I do not want or need. By my read at Apple Support I will lose access to even the stuff I physically put on the iPhone when the Apple Music service stops. WTH should I have to pay Apple $10 a month to listen to music I already own? without ever downloading anything new from Apple?

Looking at your response, you seem to have access to your music on your iPhone without maintaining the subscription to Apple Music service. I will be attempting your suggestions on my sons phone shortly, next time I have 3 weeks to commit to simple file transfer.

I’m a recent convert from Android to Apple. I have some real issues now with Apple deciding what data I can and can’t put on MY phone.

~~~
I’ve had Samsung/Androids and I’ve had iPhones, and what you said is the biggest difference between the two, in my opinion.
I miss being able to drop media files right into my Android device and just playing it. No gatekeeper (iTunes) to decide what I’m allowed to play, or what’s free or needs to be paid for.
I now use a 3rd party music player instead of my phone(s) for playing media.
Android, I could plug it in to my PC and Win10 would assign a drive and I could physically see everything on my Android. I could create folders, add/delete data, transfer files/data etc..., just like any other hard disk on my PC. You can do NONE of that with Apple. The PC sees it, assigns it, but if you attempt to open it, it says the ‘folder is empty’. I know the phone folder isn’t empty, I just added 1800+ tunes to it. Not to mention the ton of crapwear that comes installed on the iPhone. I said earlier, file transfer is one of the most basic functions of a computer. Without it all you have is a very expensive brick.
There is also the “Files” iPhone App for manual file transfers to/from the iPhone. (.mp3, etc.).
