The stage is set for what has been referred to as the “Oscars of Spirit Competitions.” Back in April, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition convened for its annual multi-day judging. Since then, we’ve seen a steady rollout of all the Double Gold winners minted during that time. To receive the honor, multiple judges must score an expression 90-or-higher out of 100. There have been hundreds of examples across a dozen spirit categories. But now it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty.
We’ve been waiting patiently for the “Best In Show,” the absolute top title amongst all 2024 spirits entries. It will finally be revealed on the weekend of October 5th in SF at a ticketed event called Top Shelf. We’ve got your sneak peek at that industry extravaganza—including how to land yourself a seat, and an exclusive preview of the finalists for that coveted Best In Show crown, which are revealed at a grand gala on the second evening.
In the running for top spirit of the year are five separate expressions of single malt scotch. The distilleries behind each one are entirely familiar to category enthusiasts, with some of the releases enjoying regular placement on US liquor store shelves. A couple of the others—not so much.

No Japanese? I don’t drink whisky but I thought they made good ones.
Worthless. Not a single Islay Malt on the list.
I’d buy the Aberlour if I could. It’s only $145 for a bottle. I’ve had another Aberlours and have been very impressed.
I bought my first Aberlour. The Casg Annanh (sp?). it’s not the best I’ve tasted but it’s so unique that I keep going back to it.
Back in the day, whiskey and water was the only way to go for me.....and maybe a lime wedge.
They do, and there were Chinese scooping up thousand dollar bottles in Kyoto this summer.
We had the opportunity to visit Scotland. They had 250 different single malt whiskeys. He was in hog heaven. By now Scotland probably DOUBLED that number.
I bought a few Hibiki 21s and 17s when they were still affordable. Those are for holidays. The rest of the year is just a dram of bourbon every few days or so.
What did you switch to?
Nothing. I quit in 2004
$9,000 would just be too much to pay.
I’ve had vairious
Aberlour Double Cask
Talisker and 45 Year Old Glacial Edge
I’m happy with Lagavulin or Laphroaig.
I am not certain that Japanese whiskey can be called Scotch. More knowledgeable folks can help me on this question.
Mr. GG2 likes Bowmar. I don’t care for single malt.
