Whether you prefer a dry martini or a refreshing gin and tonic, your gin of choice defines the cocktail. If you love gin, you know how it can unfold like a story with each sip: Juniper is the main character, while spices, citrus, and other aromatics play the supporting roles.
We believe there’s a gin for almost any imbiber, even the folks who think they don’t like it. If you’re turned off by assertive, sprucy gins, we have a pick for you that’s smooth and bright. If you like old pine boxes in dusty attics and want to capture that sensory experience in a glass, we have a gin for you, too.
Food and drinks writer (and Wirecutter contributor) Tammie Teclemariam and I tasted 12 gins in all. To find the best ones to suit many tastes and budgets, we focused mainly on London Dry gins because they are the most widely available and the easiest to compare (thanks to a standardized distillation process). And we included a couple of bottles that we believe are true all-purpose gins, meaning they mix exceptionally well into three of the most common gin cocktails: a dry martini, a gin and tonic, and a Negroni.

Cool, thx. Maybe I can have some input. I don’t drink gin or vodka or tequila. Sometimes whiskey or bourbon, but most often rum. Hubby is a beer guy.
I’m guessing the Beefeater gal was impressed?
Your kidding? Right?
“Will we ever get to rum? Just wondering.”
Yes! #1 Goslings Black Seal #2 Mount Gay Eclipse. 3. Callwood Arundel Cane Rum.
Your turn!
Botanist is by far my favorite.
I drink gin and rum primarily but occasionally I’ll drink a Highland Scotch like Oban.

Good gin and because I don’t like them better than any Islay Scotch.
Those are all excellent, but my faves are Zacapa (23) or Flor de Cana (12 yr) because of the price point.
When I can find it, the Costco Kirkland 12 yr dark from Panama is a bigger budget stretcher. I also love anything from Plantation and have several on hand for different drinks that float my boat.
My absolute favorite coconut rum is from Kauai. I make a fun Sunburn from that, and yes, I’ve kicked it up a notch. Add a little grenadine and I’ve dubbed it a “Sunset”.
Gin is my favorite liquor. I have a “little black book” (not one filled with women’s names and numbers, but instead with gin-drink recipes).
Some really great gins have already been mentioned. To this list I would add Empress 1908. In fact there is a drink named after it called the Empress Watermelon Crush (of which I had a few this summer). Good stuff!
P.S. I’ve never had number 3.
Sounds great
My wife likes Plymouth. I’ve heard Hendricks is good.
Made by Callwood distillery in Cane Garden Bay, Tortolla, British Virgin Islands. Almost impossible the U.S. pretty much have to go to Tortola to get it, or st to duty free shop in Puerto Rico or tag someone that’s going to the BVI to get you some. I’ve only got a half bottle left. 😫
I’m sure that’s the reason I’ve never had it. Furthest I’ve been was Jamaica. Hence, Appleton as my opener.
Maybe one day I will get to the BVI. We used to talk about that for visiting. Lately I’ve been wanting to go to French Polynesia. I’m guessing that must be the most wonderful food ever. French + Polynesian cuisine? Turquoise water? Sounds really nice to me!
Beefeater used to be my favorite. Until they cheapened it up by lowering proof. I now consider Beefeater a garbage cheap low class gin.
I’m happy with the Beefeater
Strong juniper taste which I dig man!
Why spend a fortune for smooth if you’re like me for the berry
It’s not like a real berry I know
I have read the best rum is not sold in the U.S. it is Tortuga rum and I have always wanted to try it since reading that.
Other than that for gin I only know Tanguray.
