There have been recent reports of pet cats injured, or worse, in the Ithaca area, with animal predation one of the possible causes...Another possible cause being that Ithaca is a sanctuary city.

I tried keeping our cats indoors for fear of coyotes. Eustace got bored and ate piece of chair leg tip and a Lego tire. Two surgeries and thousands of dollars later, I let my kitties out. They are happier, and no health issues.

Alejandro Mayorkas finally admitted on Sunday that 12,000 Haitian migrants have been released into the U.S., claiming that number could go up as 5,000 other cases are still being processed and confusingly says not stopping illegal immigration is a ‘proud tradition.’
‘Approximately, I think it's about 10,000 or so – 12,000 thousand,’ Mayorkas told Fox News Sunday when asked how many have already been released into the country.
‘It could be even higher,’ he added. ‘The number that are returned could be even higher. What we do is we follow the law as Congress has passed it.’

I can’t think of any reason we’d let our cats outside. They’re comfortable with that.
In fact, after our first night in our new house, when I got up and went went to the living room the door to outside was wide open. I screamed for DH, terrified that had run away. They hadn’t had time for imprinting the location and may not be able to get back home.
Finally found them huddled together under our bed, and they were visibly scared.

Not "our" community cat, whose welcoming residence is across our street in this densely populated (about 23k per sq. mile) "low income" American city, but who adamantly insists on living outdoors, where she (who has given birth to 5 litters) loves to catch mice (and eat most of them) neighbors as us provide her ample food.
The dairy farm I used to work at had many feral cats which helped keep the rat population down.
