A woman accused of driving under the influence used a partially automated driving system when she struck and killed two people on a Philadelphia highway in March, authorities said.
Dimple Patel, 23, faces multiple criminal charges, including DUI homicide and involuntary manslaughter, Pennsylvania State Police announced in a release. Patel turned herself in to police on Tuesday.
The crash occurred around 3 a.m. on March 3 on I-95, police said. Two cars had pulled over to the left side of the highway, with one presumably assisting the other. As one driver exited his vehicle and the other stood nearby, Patel rear-ended one of the cars, triggering a four-vehicle collision that resulted in the deaths of both men, who were identified as Aktilek Baktybekov and Tolobek Esenbekov.
Investigators found that at the time of the crash, Patel was using Ford's BlueCruise hands-free driving feature with adaptive cruise control activated.
“No partially automated vehicle technology should ever be left alone to perform the driving tasks that are required to safely navigate the roads of the commonwealth,” the Pennsylvania State Police said in the Tuesday release. "While the advancements in technology are immense, always strive to maintain proper control of your vehicle."
Ford’s BlueCruise system allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel on specific highway sections while the system manages steering, braking and acceleration, using external sensors to monitor the vehicle's surroundings. A driver-facing camera is supposed to ensure that the driver remains attentive and can take control of the vehicle at any moment.
Patel's defense attorney, Zak Goldstein, told NBC News on Wednesday that the role of the BlueCruise system in the crash would be critical to the case.

Thank the Lord that they have started creating personal firearms with “hands-free systems.” The “lawyers” would have a field day.
You know it’s 2024 when you read an article about a vehicular homicide case on I-95 in Philadelphia, and the only American involved is the Ford vehicle.
But I saw in the commercials that you can raise your hands, clap and sing songs while the vehicle drives itself. Why not have a few pops along the way?
Someplace in Canada has banned self driving cars ,you can’t even drive through with one ,LOL
I’m pretty sure that Ford was probably built in Mexico or Canada.
Okay so it took the criminal defense attorney six months to figure out how they were going to rope in the deep-pocket on this thing before giving the perp the go-ahead to turn herself in to the cops. Did anyone bother to ask her what took her so long?
I don’t think it matters where it was bought. With regards solely to the story, only an idiot would drive a self driving vehicle around foot traffic or heavy vehicle traffic, or anyplace else such as an open road.
The imperfection of the systems doing the self driving is a menace to public safety. The driver might have been hammered, but regardless, she would not have tried any hands free crap had she been in a conventional vehicle.
Sensors and artificial intelligence cannot compete with the ability of the human sensors and human mind to detect and instantly respond to a potential accident.

That’s in British Columbia. Don’t know about the rest of Canada.

Self-Driving Cars....What could possibly go wrong?
RRA Capital, a leading investment firm specializing in CRE bridge loans, announced today that it has welcomed two new executive team members, Dimple Patel as General Counsel and Kyung Kim as Managing Director of Originations.
A promising career cut short and two lives ended.
Yep, a lawyer’s dream case: “the car’s autocruise wasn’t drunk, just inept- didn’t matter if she was drunk or not as the car was “in control”, doing the driving. The whole point of autocruise or autodrive is for the car to handle the driving. If the system isnt capable, then what is it doing instzlled in vehicles already? My client was under the impression that she bought a car that was capable of self driving, which means that it will obey all laws, and keep from colliding with other cars or people or objects.”
Or some such argument (likely far more sophisticated than my feeble attempt to describe a possible argument)

I went to a Ford dealership about a month ago to look at their Mavericks. I told the sales guy I was only interested in one built in the United States or Canada. No problem, the sales guy said. They’re all built in the United States.
I left him and went browsing the lot. Every Maverick there was built in Hermosillo, Mexico.
I cannot believe that a car salesman would lie. So I can only conclude that the United States has invaded and annexed Hermosillo.

not really knowing how self driving systems work, maybe She could claim that when the car veered, she tried to correct the car, but the selfdrive system wouldn’t let her take control, or full control, and the accident resulted. how cluld thye prove otherwise? should could claim she got control but the system kept taking over
But then the prosecution could argue that she was drunk and could not properly regain control and deserves to be charged with homicide or some charge.
Wonder how it’s gonna be argued? Interesting problem faced by the “auto-driving systems”
She forgot to activate the ‘don’t crash’ app.
I did a search, the Ford Mach E is manufactured in Mexico. I guess North American would be a better description.
The chebby I just bought was Hecho in Mexico
Patel? PATEL? Are you kidding me?
