Marijuana Is Too Strong Now
The Atlantic (cached version) ^ | 8/29/24 | Malcolm Ferguson

As weed has become easier to obtain, it has become harder to smoke.A strange thing has happened on the path to marijuana legalization. Users across all ages and experience levels are noticing that a drug they once turned to for fun and relaxation now triggers existential dread and paranoia. “The density of the nugs is crazy, they’re so sticky,” a friend from college texted me recently. “I solo’d a joint from the dispensary recently and was tweaking just walking around.” (Translation for the non-pot-savvy: This strain of marijuana is not for amateurs.)

“There are strains even “speedier” than coffee that actually give energy and focus with close to zero impairing compounds (some of the true Cannabis Sativa strains with almost no Cannabis Indica genetics).”

That would be Durban Poison, an original African landrace that sits at about 25% THC when grown outdoors at home.

Indicas are the disabling varieties due to their secondary cannabinoids and turpenes. Oddly some people prefer that disablement.

Prolly best to grow one’s own. They know what and where it came from plus avoiding the greedy government taxation. Better yet don’t smoke it at all. Said by a former user of pot from decades ago. Now I hate even breathing in any smoke from the BBQ grill.

Legal weed is outrageously expensive. After all of the taxes fees, etc. Starting a dispensary costs a couple hundred thousand if you get all of the approvals and jump through all the hoops and hurdles.

“The stuff is dangerous and its been that way for probably 10 years now.”

Actually the Indicas have been that way for 4,000 years. You just could not obtain them here.

I use an indica gummy specifically made for sleep. I rarely use it any other times anymore.

Used to make my own which was a lot of work and difficult to standardize. Now there are dispensaries within walking distance.

The stuff made me paranoid back in the 70s, that’s why I stopped. I’m thankful I don’t smoke it today. My brother still does, I don’t know how he functions, but he does. In fact he grows his own. That stuff stinks, I don’t remember it smelling like that 50 years ago.

Hopefully they find away to make pot that doesn’t smell as bad. It stinks up an entire neighborhood when someone smokes some

Vaping and edibles are odorless

Legalizing that crap and letting teen aged kids jump off the THC high board is easily the dumbest idea neo-liberals ever came up with.

I couldn’t agree more. I can’t stand being around the stuff anymore. I helped my brother clean up some storm damage on his property last month. He took a pot break at the end, and I reeked of the stuff and had to throw my clothes into the wash immediately upon arriving home.

Completely agree!
I assume the dopers don’t realize how bad they stink?
I can smell them from 1/2 mile away. It’s nauseating. 🤢

I have a departed friend who was a police officer. He pulled over a car load of teenage boys for speeding or something stupid, and when the driver rolled the window down it smelled like he had Willie Nelson, Snoop Dogg, and Cheech and Chong in the car with him. My friend pulls them out, and searches the car and finds *1* small joint. (Evidently they had smoked the rest already). They were just dumb kids, so he explained the law to them, kept the joint and sent them on their way. He says he remembered that he used to smoke in the early 80’s, and it was almost quitting time, so he found a spot and smoked it. He said it hit him like a freight train. He had NEVER experienced anything like that.

So this news story tracks his experiences.

RIP Kenny, you were a good dude.

I would support just legalizing vape and pot based food. I don’t do it anyways but the smell is just awful and makes an entire neighborhood look bad.
If a town can have noise ordinance laws then I suppose it can have smell based laws too

“the solution is to take fewer hits”

I used to use that argument, speaking as an observer (I’m afraid of it).

But now, with people saying a single hit of some strains (especially concentrates) is like getting hit by a truck, the incrementalism philosophy is impractical.

About 20 years ago I heard the same from a person who used pot in the 1970s, didn’t use it for 35 years and tried it again circa 2005.

When I was in Vietnam we were smoking Tia Sticks, didn’t take much to put you behind the little animals. Since it’s now legal in AZ I bought a small package of 32% THC weed and a tin of 10 MG Gummies. The weed was strong but manageable. The gummies are a whole different story. I ate a 10 mg gummie when I left Payson AZ and by the time I hit the NM border, it was a game changer. When you smoke it you lose a lot of the potency, you also lose potency as it dries out. With gummies you get 100 percent of what available. Takes longer but when it hits, it hits like a train. I should have done about a fourth of that to be honest, then I wouldn’t have spent so much time on the side of the road taking pictures of the satellite dishes out side of Soccoro. But I got some great pictures.

I believe the concentrates play a big part in what we’re seeing and it’s going unreported, some of those can reach up to 90%. The Hashish we got from time to time over there was around 40 to 50 percent (I’m just guessing at that one), it would put you in the bunk listing to your radio for a few hours.

I don’t smoke the stuff recreationally. But a few drags on a vape pen stops my debilitating migraines in minutes. I get light induce migraines about twice a year. They are brutal. A good week out of commission. No pharmaceutical concoction has helped like cannabis for me. And yes. This silly story is silly. Like a drunk complaining vodka has too much alcohol after switching from beer. DUH. You don’t have to drink the whole bottle or smoke the whole “nug.”
