As weed has become easier to obtain, it has become harder to smoke.A strange thing has happened on the path to marijuana legalization. Users across all ages and experience levels are noticing that a drug they once turned to for fun and relaxation now triggers existential dread and paranoia. “The density of the nugs is crazy, they’re so sticky,” a friend from college texted me recently. “I solo’d a joint from the dispensary recently and was tweaking just walking around.” (Translation for the non-pot-savvy: This strain of marijuana is not for amateurs.)

Drastic strengthening of the effects of marijuana is an inevitable result of the long banning of the drug. Prohibition converted the nation from being mostly a beer drinking population to whiskey because it is easier to smuggle in larger amounts of alcohol as high proof whiskey than as low prof beer. Marijuana, when I was a teenager was not particularly toxic. The concentration of THC has been increased by breeding many many fold. Much more can now be smuggled in a given volume and thus it is much more profitable. My dabbling went away when I realized that I was paranoid as hell after only a couple of hits from a joint being passed around. That stuff is now pure evil.
I used to smoke pot decades ago, but had to stop as I found myself going insane. Also gave up alcohol and other drugs. I have a seizure disorder and I am sure it is doubly good that I quit it all years ago.
I’ve delivered freight to a few of these marijuana processing facilities.
The SMELL is overwhelming. Like a herd of skunks spraying at the same time.
I guess if you work there you get used to it
I remember news reports that MJ was too strong fifty years ago. I have never tried it. Something about being in a situation where I no longer control may actions might be a reason.
Maybe after 40 years of getting high you’ve developed a tolerance for weed that normal people don’t have, but its a simple fact that marijuana has gotten more potent over the years.
Legalizing that crap and letting teen aged kids jump off the THC high board is easily the dumbest idea neo-liberals ever came up with.
It’s also too expensive. The dispensaries can’t compete w/ the local dealers. Not even close.
My 74 year old pal and I still partake, but we only smoke crumbs of bud for a light euphoria. I haven’t smoked a joint in many moons. That’s crazy strong stuff compared to the Mexican ditch-weed we puffed as young’ens.
Good point you don’t need a crutch to deal with the day or life.
Bonus round: you don’t have to smell cat urine to let people
know your around.
Again, getting more potent is relative. Means little. Instead of us passing around a couple of doobies to get mellow, we just passed around 1, and didn't even have to finish it sometimes if it was just that good!
Legalizing makes it more convenient for adults. Criminalizing it made it attractive to teens and they had absolutely no problems getting it when it was illegal, and I know that fact personally. Until it was legalized, they were getting better flower than I could find!
Legalizing it just let the government finally get their cut because they cannot stop it in the first place. Regulating it may help keep it out of teens hands eventually, but got to get the tax man out of the way first to push it down the path they took Tobacco.
Interestingly, that is starting to change. I’m getting decent quality flower at reasonable prices lately from local dispensaries. Not the top shelf offerings mind you, but quite nice nonetheless.
The prices had to come down or they would not be able to keep their doors open.
Alcohol makes me feel exactly as you describe, being unable to control my actions properly due to that intoxicant. We see the deadly results of Alcohol consumption and losing control almost every day.
My choice of a pleasurable, relaxing intoxicant is not Alcohol.
Can’t figure out if she’s stoned or hammered.

Yes, I will always remember the nasty, Mexican commercial weed.
Nasty stuff!
Certainly. Pretty dumb idea because this stuff grows anywhere, and they can’t spray everywhere, particularly indoors.
Who knows how many people got hurt from smoking weed polluted with that stuff.
Dried cannabis has increased from an average of 3% THC in the 1980s to around 15% today. Vaping THC concentrate can range from 40% to over 80% THC
Back in the 60’s and 70’s I used to smoke a half doobie to get a good buzz, now 3 hits does the job. Better than booze, no hangover, no liver or kidney damage, no booze infused rage. Many different strains available, you don’t have to buy the kick ass stuff if you don’t want, plenty of weaker strains available and they are much cheaper. 55 years, no cancer, no paranoia, no anxiety. Helps with my arthritis pain and sleep.
“ This strain of marijuana is not for amateurs”
Gotta start sometime.
When American businessmen drank they took over the world and chewed up the competition.
