If you've been on Instagram or TikTok recently, you've likely come across those viral videos of dogs hitting soundboard buttons while their proud owners feign exasperation at their furry friend's seemingly eloquent demands.
Who wouldn't want to give their beloved pet the opportunity to talk back in a way we can understand?
Skeptics such as this biologist have unsurprisingly raised their eyebrows at this fad, which has owners claiming their dogs can use the soundboards to form near-sentences asking for food, requesting help, raising alerts, and even questioning their mirror reflection.

I think dogs understand single words.
You don’t have to use entire sentences when it comes to dogs.
I had a n Irish Setter,a brilliant field dog hunting upland game. At the age of 7 I counted his vocabulary, he understood about 60 words. Often he would try to talk
mumbling away and moving his jaw, often doing it when something was bothering him, so I payed attention.
I miss that pooch , he passed at the age of 13.
That’s what I came here for.
Bunny/Walz 2024.
I think they understand voice tone and facial expressions as well.
Yes, I think they understand that in terms of whether you are pleased with them or not.
Side note: I reluctantly inherited a cat. Now I am 100% pro-cat. For all their eccentricities, they do get to you.

As kids, we had a small terrier who was a gem of a dog. My mother trained him to get us up in the morning for school, with the dog rousing us according to name as my mother instructed.

So glad you were found to be acceptable for your cat. They do tend to get a grip on hearts, I have found.
We had a dog named Robbie. We used t say to him, ‘want to go out’? Then open the door to the backyard and he’d happily run out there.
One day he came up to my sister, mother and I and in his little doggie voice, all in one doggie whine like voice said, ‘wannagoout’ and ran to the door tail a-waggin’.
He knew what it meant but obviously the sound to him was a one block of a sound he was familiar with. The sound made when associated with letting him out.
It was cute though :)🐶
My son’s dog Reya chose which words to understand.
Our Beagle mix, Chipper, actually said “ I wanna go out”. He did it i his canine whine but it contained 5 separate syllables and the I and out were clearly identifiable. He was a great friend. Lived to 14.
Oh yes, facial expression is very well understood by dogs.
I have a deaf Great Dane and he knows exactly what is what, from my facial expression alone.
It definitely takes time and you have to be committed to train them.
OTOH, facial expressions goes both ways. I can tell when they’re up to no good. 😊
