Bronze Ship's Ram Recovered Near Sicily

Reuters reports that a bronze ram has been recovered from some 260 feet of water off the coast of western Sicily, near the Aegates Islands, by divers from the Society for the Documentation of Underwater Sites. The front of the ram is decorated with a helmet topped with three feathers, but deposits of shells and seaweed currently cover any other possible marks or inscriptions. Such a ram would have been placed on the bow of a warship and used to attack enemy vessels. This ram, and 26 others recovered from the area, have been assigned to the Battle of the Aegates Islands, fought in 241 B.C., and the victory of the Roman Republic over Carthage in the First Punic War.

Adder ~ A rostrum or beak. The Romans quickly adopted its use to claim Mediterranean supremacy.

katana ~ The Carthaginians built their ships like putting together an IKEA kit. Once the Romans captured and dismantled one, found all the assembly code numbers written on them, they copied the pattern and built a matching fleet of their own.

So wait, what?

Romans stole Carthage's intellectual property, made their own copies and took over the world?

Sorta like China is doing to us and the west now?

History does repeat...

Exactly. Prior to that time Rome had virtually no navy and didn’t grasp how to build warships. They managed to capture a vessel and copied it...and became better sailors than their enemies.

Et tu, Mao?
