Have supermarkets reached peak self-scan?
BBC ^ | Aug 25 | Emer Moreau

Posted on 08/25/2024 4:30:21 PM PDT by RandFan

After years of encouraging shoppers to scan their own groceries, some supermarkets are checking out a move back to traditional tills.

Asda said it would put more staff on checkouts, while Morrisons admitted it might have "gone too far" with self-scan. Northern upmarket chain Booths has got rid of them altogether.

The dreaded "unexpected item in the bagging area" announcement is among a list of customer complaints about self-service tills.

But some shoppers told the BBC they're happy to skip the queues and the chit chat if it speeds up their shop.

The debate over staffed versus unstaffed tills has continued to rumble on as the number of self-scan tills has increased over the past 20 years to some 80,000 in the UK.

I remember only one commercial of theirs where they were in a blimp that was going down and the talker said, “Now would be an especially good time to thank you for your support!”

It doesn’t make sense. Why can’t the computer check the ID? It reads credit cards just fine.

Verifying identity would be my guess.

So verifying identity on a credit card is irrelevant?

My Walmart is pretty new, so they’re still trying to please customers. Doing a lot better there than the other grocery store that’s closer to me. The butcher and other managers at the little grocery love me, but they have a wacko cashier at the self checkout who is very much on an ego trip. I can’t put up with her any more. They’ve totally lost me as a customer. If I thought a letter to them would help solve things, I would do it. I really don’t think it would solve any of my issues. And face to face they would only give me lip service. They’re dead to me.

I told you in my post, businesses need to handle their own business and leave me out of the business decisions and paying their workers.

Businesses need to take care of their own labor costs and quit pestering the customers to pay the workers, handle that stuff within their business.

You’d think she would recognize you’re not a shoplifter by now. Oh well. I used to use Walmart more but they took out the self-checkout lanes and now it takes forever to check out, because out of the two dozen or so registers, only about 3 are open at any time, and the lines go on forever. And all the customers seem to have shopping carts stuffed to maximum.

Nope. Just not as liable, legally, for the business.

Stealing is incremental murder.

I stopped using paper plates when they exceeded $0.05.

You must be very comfortable with the current restaurant practice, then.

The last time I went to a local not-cheap smokehouse, they served me two ribs, beans and potato salad all stacked up on a tray with a paper placemat.

No dishes. No silverware.

I felt like I. Was one of the their hogs and had just gotten slopped.

I use instacart, a separate business from the retailers that sell the products.

Their workers take my list, go to the store, find all the items, bag them and deliver to my front door.

For that, I have no problem paying extra to the person doing it via a tip, and I pay an annual fee for the service.

The stores aren’t really involved other than selling the stuff.

It’s filled a void in the market separately from the store, and for that I’m grateful and will pay a bit of a premium.

Illegal, immoral, but not murder, even incrementally.

IOWs they don’t care if people are using stolen credit cards in their stores.

It still seems stupid to me. My DL has at least four forms of digital technology on it. A bar code, another weird looking scannable code (not the kind used in ads and on product labels), a holographic image of my ID pic on both sides and a scan stripe like CC cards have. I think there’s a fifth type that runs throughout the face of the DL like they use on paper money to prevent forgery.

All that and they need a human to look at the pic. Some dummy who probably doesn’t care about their liquor license.

So you have nothing to do with Walmart+ then or what I was posting about.

The dummy looking at the license doesn’t set the store policy, as silly as it may seem.

Selling alcohol to a minor using a pilfered ID can result in more severe penalties than someone using a stolen credit card.

Just simple facts.

Correct.

Walmart has their own thing. Not familiar with it, but they, as well as hundreds of local businesses are on Instacart.

I’ve gotten to know several of the checkers where I shop, it gives me a chance to chat, ask about their families, and joke around. Worth the wait in line.

You wouldn’t believe her. She once was checking one of my coupons and had the nerve to tell me that the shredded cheese package I wanted to buy wasn’t allowed. The coupon called for 8 Oz packages, and was probably printed a few months before. They have since downsized to a 7 ounce package. I tried to explain to her that they were worried about me trying to purchase a package of cheese LARGER than the allotted 8 oz, say, the 14-16 oz sizes. She said nope. I left.

They had to put away my cart of groceries. I’m so sick of sheer stupidity. Nobody has brains anymore. I wasn’t trying to cheat them. They changed the package size. It was the same cheese that I’ve bought for quite some time. Because of Bidenomics, the store changed the size of the package but left the coupon alone. I guess they figured a manager could sort it out. I’m so tired of incompetence at every level of society.

And pretty soon, we will all be treated to a new level of incompetence in our Presidency, because I know the Dims will cheat again.
