Connecticut mom moves to hotel room due to high rent prices: ‘Exactly what I prayed for’

A Connecticut mom moved into a hotel with her two children as a cheaper alternative after she was forced out of the home she had rented month-to-month.

Suzanne Hayes was caught off guard in February when her landlord broke the news that the house she had been living in for the past six years was put on the market and she would need to move out before March 1.

“I loved my house. It had a charm of its own and was within walking distance to both my ex’s house and the kids’ schools, and my landlord never increased the rent,” Hayes wrote in an essay to Business Insider.

Although she loved her home of six years, Hayes — a single mother — says she was also filled with unease living on a month-to-month lease while still needing to focus on the “infinite” yard work, the constant malfunctions of the furnace and oil tanks and the mice problem.

First of all, get out of Connecticut. But if a temporary situation at the hotel works and she can negotiate a price that's great. Just temporarily.

“I loved my house.”

It wasn’t your house.

It use to be..1980s.. you could get a hotel room for $35-75 a week.
You know before all the hope and joy existed.

What is the monthly cost of that hotel room?
Who is paying for it?
Sounds like she has more than 1 child — how long does the family intend to share a room at a hotel?

I don’t really know what the solution is to the housing crisis (deporting illegals is part of the solution) but having people live in hotels doesn’t seem like a permanent solution.

Obviously government is paying for her hotel stay. She’s probably on the Section 8 waiting list as well. I’ll never figure out women who divorce their husbands on a whim then crow about “how hard it is to do it on my own.” ™

I say this as a TRUE domestic violence victim and TRUE divorced single mom who didn’t want to divorce. Today’s woman divorces the man (or kicks baby daddy out) over “he didn’t help with the kids after working all day” etc. etc.

BINGO!

Small landlords are selling en masse due to all the “tenant protection” laws that give the tenant the actual private property rights and not the owner.

Unintended consequences.

It doesn’t actually say he was her husband...only that he was her “ex”.

Considering the rental situation these days, a hotel may have been her only option.

The couple weeks notice she got was not enough to find a new place. The landlord should have done better than that.

But, better a hotel than on the street.

Maybe not unintended.

Considering the way the government is working and their goals, it’s more than likely deliberate to force us into a government controlled, lawless society.

Well, yes. In NYS they just passed “Good Cause” as part of the April 2024 budget. Which came on top of the despicable “Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act” of 2019 signed into law by Peekaboo James and Cuomo.

Good cause deployed downstate universally and is able to be opted into upstate. Albany, Ithaca, and now Syracuse and Rochester are falling like dominos. The TENANT has the ultimate authority over how you will use your property, if you want to sell, too bad if the tenant doesn’t want you to, etc.

They are eligible for more money from the government, and they have absolute power over the kids.

How long will the New York real estate paradox continue? Commercial building ( office towers and malls) have high vacancy rates, are decining in value and banks have huge amounts of non performing loans on the properties. Yet residential realestate especially in NYC is booming. Demand is high, rents are high and values are increasing. something has to give.
