NEW-ORLEANS, Friday, Aug. 12, VIA CAIRO, Thursday, Aug. 18.

The steamer Kate Dale, from Fort Gaines Harbor, yesterday morning, arrived here last night.

Admiral FARRAGUT had prepared his fleet for action, and ordered the attack, on Fort Morgan to be commenced at 8 o'clock yesterday morning.

It was to receive an enfilading fire from the fleet and land force. Its rear is said to have resisted the attack, wherever, there was a foot of ground to stand upon.

The rebels had destroyed all the out-buildings of the fort, and had also burned their only vessel lying under its guns.

Everything about the fort indicated a determination on the part of the rebels to contest the battle to the last.

The channel to Dog River is unobstructed.

The naval and land forces are confident of success:

At a late hour last night we heard that the Admiral had demanded the unconditional surrender of the fort.

The demand or FARRAGUT on Tuesday last for the surrender of the fort was refused by the rebel Commander, who replied that he had six months' provisions, plenty of fighting men, and would resist to the last moment.

Before this, Gen. GRANGER's force in the rear had cut off all the communications of the fort.

The ram Tennessee was in the attack.

FARRAGUT was confident of reducing the fort.

The Hartford was badly injured.

We hold all the channels to the bay.

WASHINGTON, Friday, Aug. 19.

The latest intelligence from Mobile is the following from the Richmond Sentinel, of the 17th, received at the Navy Department to-day.

MOBILE, Monday, Aug. 15.

Two monitors and five gunboats crossed Dog River bar, and, coming up to within two miles of the obstructions, opened fire for three hours on our batteries and gunboats, doing no damage.

Fort Morgan and vicinity used to be such a fun place to roam and explore when I was a kid. It was free and totally open to explore. I recall the “blood of Confederate soldier” sign, which later the curators insisted on saying it wasn’t true. There was a flowing well just outside the fort from which water and natural gas both flowed. At night you could set it afire to see flaming water. Inside the fort an old cannon lay lose in one of the dark back passageways. The last time I was there was about 30 years ago. Just not the same.
