Trump Is No Longer Even Pretending to Champion the Working Class
The New York Times ^ | Aug. 16, 2024, 5:04 a.m. ET | Michelle Goldberg

The most consequential moment from Donald Trump’s glitchy interview with Elon Musk on Monday came during a discussion of government cost-cutting. “Well, you, you’re the greatest cutter,” Trump told Musk, before launching, apropos of nothing, into a reverie about how Musk dominates his employees. “They go on strike,” said Trump. “I won’t mention the name of the company, but they go on strike and you say, ‘That’s OK. You’re all gone. You’re all gone. So every one of you is gone,’ and you are the greatest.”

Trump’s sympathy with plutocrats over unions is not a surprise, given both his record in office and his desperate desire for the approval and admiration of other billionaires. Though the ex-president made successful electoral appeals to the working class — particularly the white working class — his record on labor was that of a standard conservative Republican.

He appointed union busters to the National Labor Relations Board, the federal agency that enforces labor law. His Department of Labor reversed the “persuader” rule, which had forced transparency on companies waging anti-union propaganda campaigns. His Supreme Court appointees dealt a severe blow to public sector unions in the Janus decision, an outcome Trump celebrated. His signature policy accomplishment was a tax cut that disproportionately benefited the rich.

And yet I bet the rank and file union members will vote for their best interests, which means voting for President Trump.

This story is the left trying to browbeat the rank and file into voting for the commie. I doubt it has much success as the NYT reach isn’t so great as it used to be.

Correct. Unions aren’t for the Working Class.

Democrats don’t seem to know what the working class is. US trade Unions are now joined with the WWP. They are all communist. The unions are now an arm of the government as in classic fascism. They no longer represent the people.

What Democrats mean when they say ‘Working class” is union member. But the unions have sold out.The unions are now an arm of the fascist state, like classic fascism.

All that are missing is the pair of horn rimmed fake glasses and a streak of blue hair. I am sure she knows all about “the working class” with all the manual labor she has done.

I had the TV muted yesterday and saw Trump standing next to grocery store coffee and chicken. Working class buys that. They despise Starbucks. Why pay that for coffee you can make at home and take with you.

Chicken is also popular for families. Kids will eat it. Why waste a good steak on a child who won't eat it all.

Working class is common sense. Trump is all that.

But Trump is outpacing Harris among rank-and-file Union workers.

That lady should be thankful we have the world’s reserve currency. If it weren’t so, all that printy-money would have us going on diets and living in tents, since food and rent would be absolutely unaffordable.

The NYT can huff and puff all it wants, because no potential Trump voter cares what they say anyway.

I’m not an expert on labor law, but it is my understanding that striking workers can generally get their jobs back and the temporary workers would have to get new employment.

At one time socialists wanted governments to buy companies, but it was realized in the early 1930s that it was cheaper to give unions the legal ability to suck out most of the profits.

In the industrial sector, unions have come to realize (generally too late) that too much sucking can be followed by factory closures.

Trump has been mostly a champion of workers. I'd pick him any day over Harris and Walz.

His outreach to unions is good.

His call to deport illegals and recover those jobs to Americans is good.

His end of taxes on tips is good.

He briefly supported offering work visas to graduating students to complete with American students, but backed off once that was roundly criticized. It deserves watching.

My only complaint and concern is his continued support of H1B and even increasing their numbers. That directly hurts American workers.

The Reserve currency is going down fast, look at BRICS and Eurasia they are leaving us behind with a new payment system not based on the Dollar and what will happen when all those Dollars are repatriated back here, more inflation. In about 5 yer the Petro-Dollar will no longer exist.

The original Bretton-Woods system after W.W. II is long gone and Nixon killed it after we went off the Gold Standard and all of the West went to a Fiat money system.

Right now, believe or not, the strongest currency is the Ruble, back by gold and a sound money policy, Russia has little debt.

Yep, just gonna get worse. Our adversaries will be happy to dump the dollar. It will have a double benefit: it will hurt us, and they will be relieved that they’re on a sounder footing by not investing in an increasingly worthless currency.

The Labour Party in the UK is attempting to wipe out the private school sector of the UK.

Many teachers working at modest pay in pleasant surroundings with pleasant students are about to lose their jobs.
