California Highway Patrol says a man is being charged for not obeying a warning from a construction worker who told him a portion of Highway 1 was closed due to a slide.
This incident allegedly occurred on Friday at around 11:00 a.m. and required California State Parks rangers to request a search and rescue for the man.
He fell trying to cross Regent's Slide after being told by a construction crew member not to.
CHP said the man rode to the worker's location on a bike at around 9:25 a.m., which was two miles south of the Highway 1 closure. The cyclist had also asked the worker for some water.
The cyclist was given the water and told that the road was closed due to a rock slide, said CHP.
"The road is not passable, and if he attempted to cross he will probably die. The crew member also told him that if he gets caught by CHP in the closure, he would be cited," CHP said in a statement.
The cyclist said he was going to try to cross anyway, per CHP. Around an hour later, a State Parks ranger arrived and drove to Regeant's Slide.
They looked across the slide and saw a backpack and a bloody arm, around 100 feet below them.
The cyclist was able to climb down to the beach and was rescued by the ranger and the Big Sur Fire Department.
He was treated for a laceration to his forearm and possible head trauma, said CHP. The cyclist was flown to Natividad Medical Center for his injuries.
The cyclist is being charged for the "wanton disregard of failing to obey a person directing traffic and failing to obey the traffic signs and signals," CHP said.
CHP added that he endangered the lives of rescue personnel who had to navigate an active slide.
"Road closures are put in place for the safety of the public as well as for the crews working within the closure. It is against the law to drive, ride or walk past a road close sign," CHP said.
It’s just a matter of perspective...
I’m not sure a rescue was called for. Darwin would not approve.
So.....a construction worker has authority? Who knew?
It must be frustrating but...
stupid should hurt.
After they blocked the roads in Hawaii and murdered all those people trying to flee, I wouldn’t trust anybody in an orange vest either.
I hope he gets the bill.
So, you think it was a good decision for him to do that?
Never rescue thrill seekers they deserve to die.
What happened to the guy’s bicycle?
Reciprocal altruism is a thing, in people. We’re not wolverines
😆
CA-1 sure gets some spectacular slides, doesn’t it?
The rescuers saw a bloody arm down below. Was it attached to anything? Like a body”
The biker will be well enough to vote Democrat in November!
Agreed. I was thinking, “What backpack? I don’t see it.”
CA 1 closed at that point until the end of the years at the earliest.
