...urban progressivism is afflicted by an inability to build. Cities in red states are building much more housing than those in blue states. In 2024, Austin, Raleigh, and Phoenix are expected to expand their apartment inventory more than five times faster than San Diego, Baltimore, or San Francisco.
One hidden effect of expensive housing is that it raises the cost of local services and creates shortages of workers willing to accept low wages in labor-intensive industries, such as child care. As a result, large urban areas have more expensive child care, even relative to their higher levels of income. A 2023 analysis by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Women’s Bureau found that infant child care devoured the highest share of family income in large urban counties. Nationwide, the average family with at least one child under the age of 5 devotes about 13 percent of family income to pay for child care. But the typical infant day-care center in San Francisco and Chicago consumes about 20 percent of a local family’s income. In Boston, Manhattan, and Brooklyn, it’s more like 30 percent. Child care is just another example of how constrained housing supply can poison parts of the economy that don’t immediately seem to have anything to do with it...
...cities in red states have managed to build houses, or better restrain child-care inflation, better than those in blue states...
The steady march of the childless city is not merely the inevitable result of declining birth rates. It’s the result of urban policy, conceived by, written by, and enacted by liberals. Progressive leaders aren’t family-hating sociopaths, but they currently preside over counties that young families are leaving. They should pride themselves instead on building places where those same families would want to stay.

This is one area that drives me nuts about liberals. They don’t have the brains to figure out how deadly their belief system is until they suffer the consequences of their beliefs. Then, and only then, do they change their minds. Meanwhile, nonliberals are stuck with the task of repairing the damage of liberalism.
No?
Trust what a progressive does and the results that he obtains. Do not trust his words. His words are nothing more than gaslighting.
They never think things through before pulling the trigger on an idea. Its a trademark of the looney left
Progressives are immune to warnings except their own, like the world is gonna bake in ten years and every coastal city will be under water and the rest will be a desert or something like that if we don’t pay enough taxes. Otherwise they will simply ignore the warning of the coming train wreck they have caused themselves.
Progressives are the ones not having children and yet they worry about climate change which even the worst estimates suggest will only significantly impact the grandchildren they will never spawn.
I STRONGLY disagree with the conclusion. Progs and liberals rarely, if ever, change their beliefs. In fact I read political beliefs are partly genetic.
I have seen it over and over when lobs move in, love it, have plenty of time to get involved in local politics, and in a few years it is recreated in the s hole they left. AND THEY VOTE.
Article:
“They should pride themselves”
As in “pride” month...lol.
The Atlantic tries to pretend lefties are responsible members of society.
They are not.
Soon the cities will be devoid of families, and the gangs will be forced to target childless cat ladies...
“Progressive leaders aren’t family-hating sociopaths...”
Abortion, genital mutilation of children, religious persecution, laws that are designed to destroy the nuclear family...
Sow the wind....
One way around the childcare conundrum is to have a lifestyle where the mom can afford to stay home. Less expensive housing is a huge factor in this equation.
Apartments? When I lived in the LA area we called them civilian barracks...Little crime colleges...One man’s floor is another man’s ceiling. It’s all very depressing.
Container housing could be the answer. Train young welders. Let the single cat ladies move in cheap. Free up housing for the families.
They’re building apartments everywhere you look in Tucson, like some sort of architectural diarrhea. As if traffic weren’t bad enough.
Daniel Greenfield of Frontpage Magazine gave a good lecture on the history of leftism in America recently. He talks about how the left doesn’t create because ultimately the only thing they do is destroy. He points out that just because they eventually always lose, it doesn’t mean we necessarily win.

Places like San Francisco, Seattle, and Minneapolis are anarcho-tyrannies, where violent crime and theft are mostly unpunished even as bureaucrats harass small businesses, drivers, and homeowners with petty violations.
Everything that liberals support is about benefitting the liberal. Whatever policies that liberals support, it’s about them and not about you. Liberals will say how they support crowded housing, but then in their areas they will regulate against it while leaving you to live in it.
Liberals will sacrifice the entire human race to their orthodoxy, because liberals only care about themselves. Everybody else is irrelevant to the liberal, unless they can be used by the liberal for personal benefit.
